AUCKLAND WINS FIRST GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP THREE TIE IN SECOND GRADE , GISBORNE, Aug .26. The New Zealand basketball championships were brought to a conclusion to'-day in ideal summer weather. The attendance throughout has been very good but to-day a record crowd was present, estimated at 2000. In the first grade Auckland wins the New Zealand championship with 10 points, Wellington being runners-up with 8 points, followed by Southland 6, Canterbury 4, Otago 2, Hawke’s Bay 0. In the second grade Waikato, South Canterbury and Poverty Bay were equal for championship honours. Each association thus holds the president’s trophy for four months. Wairarapa were runners up with 5 points, then came Marlborough 4, Wairoa 3, Manawatu 0. Results of to-day’s games:— First grade: Southland 21 beat Hawke’s Bay 10; Auckland 17 beat Canterbury 13; Wellington 15 beat Otago 9. Second grade: Waikato IS beat Poverty Bay 13; South Canterbury 16 beat Wairarapa 15; Marlborough 26 beat Manawatu 13; South Canterbury 18 beat Waikato 17; Poverty Bay 19 beat Wairarapa 14; Marlborough 22 beat Wairoa 10. • In the inter-island match North beat South by 16 goals to 11. The winners owe their victory largely to the sterling work of their defenders who cleared repeatedly.
