OROUA DOWNS

At the monthly meeting of the Oroua Downs AV. 1., held last Tuesday, Mrs. W. Scott, welcomed many visitors and presided over an excellent attendance. After much discussion it was decided to plant a native treo in the school grounds in conjunction with the school Arbor Day. ceremony. Mrs. Scott gave a most interesting report on the Dominion conference held in .Christchurch. Word was received from Mrs. Will, of Rongotca, stating that she would hold a class next Friday in the local hall for those intending to make gloves. A “peggy square" rug made by members for relief, was on view. During the afternoon a most interesting demonstration was given by Mrs. Simkin, of Bulls, on rug-making from old woollen rags. Handsome specimens of this work were very much admired. Mrs. Churchill, also of Bulls, gave an interesting talk on Drama. The monthly competition for "darning" was won by Mrs. Jamieson, with Mrs. N. Batchelor second. In the junior class Miss M. Christensen was first and Miss Iv. Albury second. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mesdames A 7. Bird and W. Gordon for making and embroidering tray clothes and table cloths. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mesdames F. Raik<ss, A. Thompson,. H. Proctor, Millard and Misses A. Grammar and D. Davey. A very enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
