Big Blaze at Marton Junction

WELL-KNOWN HOTEL RAZED TO GROUND The Marton Junction hotel, situated opposite tho Marton station, was burned to the ground at one o’clock on Monday morning, the building, a twostoried structure, being completely demolished within half an hour of the discovery of the fire. The alarm was given by tho night porter to Mr. W. Johnston, who roused the inmates who escaped in their night attire. The present licensee, Mr. J. Carmichael, who had only been in occupation since February, is a heavy loser as he had made extensive alterations and improvements since taking over. The building was owned by the Hunt estate, Wellington, and the insurances being in that city, arc not available. This is tho third big fire that has occurred in Marton within a short space of time. Some years ago tho hotel on the opposite side of tho station was burnt in similar fashion and the occupants had an anxious time, one of the boarders sustaining fatal burns in endeavouring to get out of the building.
