Invasion of England by Continentals
Tho Continental invasion of the British kitchen, which was so marked before tho Great War, has commenced once more, records an English paper. During the last few months there has been a largo increase in the number of Swedish, German, French and Austrian girls who have taken up domestic work, in England, Blonde, blue-eyed Swedish girls—girls who are young and belong to extremely good families—aro cooking and. cleaning in British homes. Girls from Austria are to-day earning their living as cook generals. And they are all learning English quickly. ‘•'Girls from the Continent aro coming into Britain at the rate of 10 a day,” said the manageress of a domestic service agency. “The Ministry of Labour controls the influx, and a special department is kept busy making out the necessary labour permits to allow these girls to work in Britain.” Several members of Parliament are rather disturbed by this flow of Continental labour to Britain. The Ministry of Labour, however, makes it clear that no labour permit is granted to a foreign girl to tako up a post if there is an English girl available, which looks at this distance, with so many unemployed women in England, as if it was still possiblo to drive a coach and four through an Act of Parliament.
