MAKOMAKO.
Mrs. W. F. Day presidod over the August meeting of the Makomako W. 1., which was held in the Makomako hall last Thursday. After the institute song had been sung tho president welcomed the visitors from the Mangamutu W.I. and expressed, heart-felt sympathy in. the passing of their president, Mrs. A. W. Hamilton, members standing in silence as an expression of sympathy with Mr. A. W. Hamilton and family. Mrs. Day then welcomed Mrs. H. Paterson and congratulated her on being appointed Dominion, president and said sho hoped-that her term of office would bo a happy one. Miss Kathleen Eising presented Mrs. Paterson with a beautiful bouquet. As representative delegate of tho Makomako. W.I. to the Dominion conference hold at Christchurch recently, Mrs. Paterson gave a full and interesting account of tho meeting. Miss Y. Hampton returned thanks to Mrs. Paterson on behalf of the members. It was with regret that the resignation off tho secretary, Miss Sowry, was received, the position, now being filled by Miss Groves. Thanks arc due to Mrs. A. R. Wylie, who capably carried out the secretarial duties during Miss Sowry’s absence. A very interesting demonstration on barbola work was given by Mrs. L. Heayns, who also had an attractive display of her handcrafts. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Heayns was passed by Mrs. Eising, members showing their appreciation by acclamation. There were 19 entries for the competitions for the best programme for an afternoon meeting. Mrs. Paterson and Mrs. Brechin kindly acted as judges, tho competition resulting: Mrs. Wylie 1, Miss Sargent 2, and Mrs. Eising, while the competition for tho prettiest coat-hanger brought forward IS entries. This was judged by Mrs. J. Curtin and Miss Daldv and resulted: Miss Sargent. 1, Miss" Busch 2, and Mrs. Mitchell' 3. After afternoon tea had been dispensed by the hostesses, Misses Jacobson, Sargent and Clark, much appreciated elocutionary items were given by Miss SaTgent. The singing of the National Anthem brought tho meeting to a close. GROUP MEETING AT BONGOTEA. A very interesting meeting was held in tho Masonic hall, Bongotea, on Wednesday afternoon, when thirteen institutes were represented by committee delegates, these being: Awahuri, Bulls, Carnarvon, Glen Oroua, Halcombe, Kairanga, Marton, Oroua Downs, Rangiotu, Bongotea, Sanson, To Arakura and Taikorca. Mrs. A. J. Will, of Bongotea, convener, ably chaired the meeting and welcomed the visitors, ills. A. H. Hobbs, of Oroua Downs, was secretary for the meeting. Varied business was discussed and a programme arranged which included addresses from Mrs. Kelso (Dominion secretary), Mrs. Bristow (convener for the drama pageant), Mrs. Churchill (Bulls) folk dancing. It was decided that Bongotea, being the most central, should be the scene of a further group meeting, when a display of handcrafts will be made. Mrs. A. K. Drew, of Sanson, proposed thanks to tho convener of the meeting, the secretary, and to Mrs. H. V. Caverhill, and Mrs. W. Sandicock for providing a dainty afternoon tea.
