WRESTLERS MIX IT AT AUCKLAND
Rumherg and Patterson Provide lively Bout FORMER WINS BY TWO FALLS TO ONE Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. A wrestling match last night between Hal Rumbcrg aud Jack Patterson was tho liveliest and roughest of the season. Rumbcrg won by two falls to one. Patterson used his elbows freely, hair-pulling, biting and making his opponent release holds by pulling one side of his mouth. Rumberg returned what he received with interest, and Patterson was frequently sent sprawling with hard forearm blows to tho face. Tho first fall wont to Patterson in the second round in rather unusual circumstances. Rumbcrg had a full nelson. on his opponent, who, however, rolled over and secured Eumberg’s arms and by lying on his pressed down liis shoulder. Rumberg ovened the falls in the fourth round by means of a flying scissors, and ho finished the match in tho fifth round by catching hold of Ms opponent’s feet, swinging him round several times and then dropping him hard on the floor and falling upon him, to secure a fall with a press. Efforts of Varga and Oswald Not. Appreciated LATTER BEATEN BY TWO FALLS TO ONE Per Press Association WANGANUI, Last Night. AVanganui wrestling fans have certainly seen bouts more interesting than that provided at the Opera House on Saturday night, when Count Varga (Hungary) beat Hank Oswald (United States) by two falls to one, gaining tho deciding fall in tho seventh round. At that stage Oswald had scarcely recovered from tho effects of a not altogether unexpected back loop slam and a body press which ended the sixth round, and Y’arga had no trouble in dumping his opponent within a few seconds after the seventh round opened. Oswald secured his fall in the fourth round after a series of flying tackes. The attendance was satisfactory, but the crowd did not altogether appreciate tho display. Pennies Thrown in Ring TAME WRESTLING BETWEEN WALKER AND CLARK. HAAVEEA, Aug. 19. After having given tho impression that he could have ended the bout much earlier, AValker defeated Clark by submission falls, gainod with a hammerlock and Greek cross respectively, in the fourth and fifth rounds of a colourless bout last evening. Clark secured the first fall in the third round, with a dump and body press, but never seemed to offer serious opposition. Ho was apparently suffering from tho effect of his recent back injury. There was a very large attendance, which showed little enthusiasm in the early stages aud an apathetic attitude after Clark’s fate. Pennies were thrown in the ring during the bout, and a large section hooted vociferously at the conclusion.
