Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Lucas and their little daughter Betty have now returned to thoir home in Awahuri after an extended tour of the Wairarapa.

Mrs. G. Drew, who has been an inmate of a private hospital in Palmerston North, has improved sufficiently to be able to return to her homo at Sanson.

There passed away at Wellington on Saturday Nurso Esther Mitchell, who for the past 17 years has been charge nurse at the Plunket centre in Courtenay Place

Mrs. F. P. Wright, who with her two small children has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Rnodcs, at Woodvillo, left with her husband yesterday for the Raglan district where Mr. Wright has bought a farm.

Miss Violet G. Bartlett, of Palmerston North, will be in London to bo presented at Court by Lady Wilford this month, states an overseas correspondent. She is now in Italy. At Milan lately, Miss Bartlett made her debut as an opera singor.

Miss A. W. Gibbs, a .member of the College Street School staff, was responsible for training the senior girls for tho country dance which was so charmingly executed and which a featuro of the programme for the annual ball on Friday evening.

Tho bost wishes of the Palmerston North Hospital Board woro yesterday extended to Mr. J. K. Hornblow, its chairman, for a speedy recovery to health of Mrs. Hornblow, who is at prosent in hospital, and the hope was expressed that she would soon be about; again.

Tho engagement is announced of Oliver, only daughter of Mr. and Mt 3. W. W. Kay, of “Ngahuru,” NorthEast Valley, Dunedin, to Alfred James, only son of Mr. arid Mrs. A. Howorth, of Roslyn, Dunedin. Miss Kay is a noted golfer. Sho held the Dominion championship some years ago and has also been successful on various occasions as the winner of provincial championships.

Of interest to hookey players in this district is the .fact that two former Palmerston North enthusiasts, who are now residing' in Auckland, represented the team’that played New South Wales last Thursday, the game resulting in a draw of ono goal each. Miss Isaacs, who represented Manawatu for several years, captained the team. Miss Landers, who threo wintei'3 ago was captain of the Girls’ High School, scored Auckland’s only goal.

Miss D. E. Bray 'was on Saturday afternoon unanimously appointed secretary of the Wellington Eacing Club by the stewards. Aliss Bray, who has. been attached to the office for some years, took over the secretarial duties in an acting- capacity when Air. J. M. Griffiths resigned, and ran the Alarch mooting in 1932. On the resignation last November of Mr. E. P. Cox, Aliss Bray was again appointed acting-secre-tary, and sho has since occupied that position with great credit, running the January, March and July meetings of the club. In recognition of her valued services the stewards decided on Saturday to give her full status. In connection with this appointment it is interesting to note that Miss AL Buchanan has been acting as secretary to the Manawatu Pacing Club for several months.
