Golf

PLAY AT HOKOWHITU.

SECOND QUALIFYING HOUND,

The July stroke competition was played at Hokowhitu on Saturday and in conjunction with it was tho second qualifying round of tho club championships. Tho conditions were good and the golf was of a high standard, there being no less than 10 cards of 80 or better off the stick. The best gross scores were returned by L. Seifert, A. E. Ekstedt and J. M. Taylor, tho first* named going round in 74, or one stroke better than scratch, and Ekstedt and Taylor in 76. Taylor was an eight handicap man and his net total 68 was threo strokes ahead of tho next host in the medal handicap. In tho B grade (15 handicap and over) A. Strange headed the field with a net 68 representing 86 off the stick. He was closely followed by A. Sharp (69) and A. Ashby (71) and N. J. Ellison and D. West wero next with 72, the five of them being mentioned in the handicapping committee’s despatches. Following arc the best cards handed in:— Qualifying Hound. L. Seifert 74 A. E. Ekstedt 76 J. M. Ifc is not often that a “hole-in-one ” is recorded at Hokowhitu and last season only one player (E. R. Chapman) claimed the distinction. At the beginning of the present season Miss W. Scott holed her tee shot at the ninth (136 yards) and W. J. G. Eoach repeated the performance during the weekend. The course was heavy and Eoach, with a low-hit ball, covered the pin. The shot pitched just short and continued on the lino, finishing in the ' ‘ can. ’ ’ Ho was the host at the subsequent celebration.

haed to plat against. In a four-ball, played during the week-end, A. E. Ekstedt and A. Seifert kept their opponents up to the mark with a best ball of 69. They were out in 35 and back in 34, but they were five under fours for the last eleven holes. Ekstedt’s Tound was equal to 73 despite a 7 at Riverside, and Seifert, who was playing below his handicap, came to light at four holes, one being a two at the ninth. Their card read: —

re-handicapped. As a result of Saturday’s play at Hokowhitu, the following players have had their handicaps reduced: —W. McKee (from 10 tq B),.Capt. McCaskill (14 to 12), L. F. Speechloy (13 to 12), J. M. Taylor (8 to 5), H. Palmer (14 to 12), N. H. Rawson (12 to 11), A. Strange (18 to 14), N. Ellison (24 to 20), A. Sharp (16 to 12), D. West (24 to 22), A. Ashby (18 to 16), R. Hatch (8 to 6). SOME GOOD CARDS. The following cards were handed in on Saturday: — L. Seifert.

P. Murray. Out: 53445553 3—37. In: 44454655 4—41. Total 78 N. TL Rawson was out in 40 despite a couplo of sixes and back in 44, returning,a card three strokes bettor than scratch; P. G. Cope’s game is a bit erratic at present and after going out in 49 he . came back in 40. L. Potter has the samo complaint, but he works it tho other way. Riversido cost him a snappy seven, but ho reached tho turn in 38. It was his second half (a 49) which upset a good card. Not many players broke 40 for the return half on Saturday, but one of these was A. Seifert, who did the nine holes in 39. A. Strange was in form on Wednesday and his 86 off the stick was good enough to carry off the honours in the B grade handicap and good enough to promote him to senior ranks. F. Murray, one of the club’s longest drivers, was out in 37, but a four at Lagoon Hill and a six at Barraud’s rather took the polish off an otherwise good sScond half. J. M. Taylor seems to have come back on his game with a vengeance and a 76 off the stick was bright work for an eight-handicap man. O. H. Druco was out with a steady 37, but a six at Ti Tis and a seven at Taipo wero blemishes on the second half of the journey. IC. S. Glendinning is reported to be back on his drive and this long-hitter should reel off some good cards in the near future. CLUB COMPETITIONS. Following are tho results of recent B. and A.
