ATHLETIC BEAT SAINTS IN MUD SCRAMBLE

Playing in the final game of thein-tcr-provincial leagues series on Saturday, Athletic beat St. Andrew’s, who are tho Palmerston North entrants for the Chatham cup,-by 4 goals to 2. The game, which in the latter stages was reduced to a mcro mud scramble, was a very disappointing one, neither sido revealing its customary form., Heavy rain in tho second spell, made accurate handling well-nigh imposisble, bill even apart from this there was too much scratchy football. Athletic cortainly deserved their win, however, playing a more rcsoluto game than ■their opponents. -The Saints did not have their usual good team work, and several good chances went begging.

Hearsey was the first to socrc for Athletic, his shot coming-as the result of hard shooting. Points were equalised shortly p.ftcr when Askam inadvertently sent the ball into his own goal. Before half-time Hearsey again got one home, followed by Travers, which made the score at the interval 3-1 in favour of the Blacks. ' After the resumption a determined rain set in, reducing the worn areas around each goal to treacherous mud plots. Under such conditions the scoring slowed up considerably, McSheffery (St. Andrew’s) and Rainford each getting a goal for his side to make the final result 4-2 in favour of Athletic. Mr T. W.
