Kia Toa Defeat Feilding

IN' POOR RUGBY DISPLAY. Interest in the Rugby fixture staged at Feilding on Saturday was somewhat greater than the class of play warranted, Kia Tea running out tho winners over Feilding by 15 points to nil. The visitors wore not up to their usual strength, nevertheless they were in point of combination, strides ahead of yellows, whoso, active forwards bore the brunt, of the battle. Time and again yellows failed to display any skill in handling the leather and their tnck> ling, until towards the end, was astonishingly feeble. It was apparent that the team was short of niuoh-uceded practice. Tho teams were: — Feilding: Eight, Thornley, Beard, Jaggard, Smith, Farmer, Adsett, Linton, Dewe, Merritt, Kitchen, Winiata, Durie McCorkindale, James.. . Kia Toa: O’Keefe, Gardiner, Boss, Griffin, Simpson, Riley, Hancock, N. Crawford, I. Crawford, Speedy, Heatley, Kerrigan, Clausen, McKenzie, French. Kia Toa defended the river end and set the leather in motion, play for tho first fifteen minutes hovering over the half-way line. From a scrum just over tho line in Feilding’s territory, Hancock got the leather away to Simpson who, thanks to very feeble tackling, battled his way through to be rewarded by a splendid try. O 'Keefe converted. s—o.

Aided by effective line kicking by Dewe and a penalty kick or two, yellows made a deep thrust into the blues’ territory, where McCorkindale’s chances were frustrated by Griffon. Dewe failed to take the pass and a scrum was called on blues’ line for a forward pass. Blues cleared to produce some excellent back line movements and on the defenco yellows twice infringed for McKenzie to miss two great efforts at. penalty goals. Reaping the advantage Kia Toa pressed home an attack which saw French score over the defenders. The kick missed. S —o. The visitors continued to do very much as they liked and just before the interval O'Keefe hoisted over a nice field goal, leaving the score at the spell, 12 —0. Shortly after resuming Beard missed penalty points for the yellows when his kick hit the cross-bar, bouncing back into play. Following up yellows fought spasmodically to gain their opponents’ line. Dewe, who had replaced Winiata as full-back, sent up a great “liner” giving yellows an opening, but the defence was altogether too sure. The pressure, however, caused Kia Toa to infringe, both Beard and Kitchen, in turn, narrowly missing hoisting the flags. Half-way through the spell Kitchen enlivened Feilding’s supporters with a solo effort, on the far side brought yellows to within an ace of a try. A little moro dash in exploiting Kitchen’s work would have borne fruit; as it was Kia Toa carried the leather over their line. The defenders quickly cleared from the scrum, but had to contend against a vigorous rally by the home side which at this stage commenced tot take up the matter of effective tackling seriously. Ground was contested with determination until McKenzie broko away and a struggle on yellows' goal-line ended in the- defenders forcing. Feilding now expended their energy and blues' efforts were soon rewarded with a try ■which Griffon seconded after receiving the leather along the back line. McKenzie’s effort to convert hit one of the uprights. 15—0. Beard’s encouraging work inspired Feilding to a rallying effort, but the over-eagerness of Eight proved a handicap. The game concluded shortly afterwards without further score. Mr. S. Still had the whistle.
