WALDEGRAVE CUP MATCHES The first matches of the Waldegrave Cup series were played at tho Palmerston North Boys’ High School on Thursday. Tho contest is an annual one between tho four club 3 of the school for premier honours iu football. Phoenix and Gordon drew 6 all after a sterling game that furnished one of tho finest exhibitions of Rugby seen in Waldegrave Cup football for many years. Gordon were tho heavier combination, but Phoenix asserted themselves early and had the better of the first spell. They led 6—o at the interval as the result of a good penalty goal by Stuckey and an unconverted try by Pletcher. Early in the second spell Gordon launched an attack which they kept up for some time. Their efforts were rewarded with a successful penalty by Moffatt and a smart crossing by Hadfield. Tho kick was unsuccessful and tho teams thus ended on even terms, their points, peculiarly enough, each being gained in tho same manner. Kia Ora were successful in defeating Albion by 12 points to 5. The game was extremely even throughout with Albion, if anything, 'holding the advantage. However, Kia Ora put on two tries in tho last ten minutes, this proving the decisive factor in tho game. Moore, Ranford, Cutler and Redshaw each registered a crossing for tho winners, while Tottman secured the only try for Albion, Hatch converting.
