Mr. C. G. Swallow, of Palmerston North, left on Tuesday for Auckland, where lie has purchased a business. Mr. A. 11. Shelton, of College street, who has been ill for some time, is now convalescent, and his numerous friends will be pleased to learn that ho is progressing very well. Guests at the Hotel Imperial include Dr. and Mrs. Micollson (New Plymouth), Mrs. and Miss Plimmcr and Messrs. Butcher and Eobinson (Wellington), Mr. A. E. Waldin (Napier.) The death is reported by cablo from Loudon of Mr. John Leslie Urquhart, the mining engineer, who came prominently before tho public some years ago in connection with mining concessions in Eussia and Siberia, which tho Soviet declined to allow to be worked.

Captain Clayton, late of the Koyai Sussex Eegimcnt, has returned to New Zealand to visit relations, states a Press Association telegram from Wellington. He is an Aucklander and has been away from the Dominion since 1914. Captain Clayton was stationed on tho Indian frontier in the Peshawar district until 18 months ago, when he retired from the army.

The death has occurred at Auckland of Mr. John William Taylor, in his 74th year. Ho arrived in New Zealand 08 years ago as a boy. His father was the first mine manager of the Brunner coal mines, near Greymouth, in the early sixties. For 35 years Mr. Taylor lived on the West Coast. He spent some years with the Kailway Department, eventually resigning from the service when occupying tho position of stationmaster at Greymouth. In 1903 he joined the Health Department at W ellington and in 190 S he was transferred to Auckland. He retired from the department in 1926.
