Mr. C. Stent, junr., overseer for tlio northern ridings of the Kiwitea county yesterday severed his connection with the local authority after nine and a half years' service, the council finding it necessary to retrench. In farowoiling Mr. Stent, the chairman (Cr. L. T. McLean) voiced the regret of the council that such a step had been found necessary and stated that Mr. Stent had given excellent service in his capacity as overseer. Crs. W. P. Shay, N. V. Shannon and W. Hair also recorded their appreciation of the work done by Mr. Stent, Cr. Shaw particularly referring to the satisfaction expressed by the settlers of the Hautapu riding at the improvement made in the roads during Mr. Stent’s regime. The county clerk (Mr. W. L. Hesseltine) remarked upon, the harmony which, had existed between the office stall and Mr. Stent, and he personally regretted the loss of his services. Mr. Stent said he realised the position and would always do what he could to assist. Mr. Eggers, who would have to watch the whole of the county. lie had enjoyed working for the council and was sorry to be leaving. At a meeting of the Board of Managers of the 3Teilding Agricultural High School held on Wednesday night it was decided to take the necessary steps to convert £320 of Government stock to the lower rate of interest. The passengers per the Wanganella from for Sydney to-day include Mr. Harold Scotney, formerly of Feilding, who has been master of the Salvation A.rmy Band in Wellington for the last 31 years. Mr. Scotney is considered one of the four best composers and arrangers of brass band music in the Salvation Army and wherever the Army is established Scotney compositions and arrangements are known. He was the arranger of the hymn “Eockdale, ’ ’ with which the Port Nicholson Silver Band won the test at the Dunedin competitions. The Pellding Anglers’ Club fished with the Pahiatua Club over the weekend in a Stockwell Cup competition. The Mauawatu river at Kumeroa was the locality chosen for the competition, the weather conditions for which were extremely unfavourable. The competition ended in a win for Pahiatua by 12 fish to six. Next week-end the Pending Club is due to meet the Dannevirke Club in a further match for the cup.
