New Zealand's First College of Pharmacy

OPENING CEREMONY IN WELLINGTON. Per Press Association WELLINGTON, Last Night. The opening in Wellington of a .School of Pharmacy and a laboratory was the mainspring of the congratulations offered at the official opening ot the annual conference of tho Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand. The Mayor (Mr. ilislop), in opening the conference, said it was his duty to declare open the new School of Pharmacy which marked the progress of a profession wffiich had always maintained a high standard. Air. Edward Smith (Auckland), president of the- Pharmacy Board, said the building was a monument to the foresight of those who had conserved the funds from the beginning. -They were proud of tho first College of Pharmacy in New Zealand. It was as well fitted and lighted as the one in tho Sydney University. Mr. Smith added: “Wo are going through changing 1 do not believe we will ever get back to tho old normal. Wo must accustom ourselves to changing conditions and strive to make them better. Wo must resolve to go forward and endeavour to raise the standard of our profession and society even higher than it has been in tho past.” Concluding, Air. Smith said the society and school were self-supporting. They had no subsidy and no State aid and would bo able to continue on a self-supporting basis in which it could be said the profession was unique. , The past president (Air. Fred Castle) hoped the board w r ould keep up the educational side and advance with the progress of scientific ideas.

A fine chamois and a good specimen of thar fell recently to tho gun of Mr A. ID. Vickers, an English sportsman, and son of Mr. D. Vickers, a former chairman of Vickers, Limited, who has been stalking in the high alps at the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mr Vickeis, w'ho was in Christchurch last week, described tho sport he had had as enjoyable. But it was very hard work, he said.

It was intended to open the tenders received for tho construction of the Fitzherbert avenuo bridge on Friday next, Cr. D. Collis reported to yesterday’s meeting of the Kairanga County Council. Ho had been given to understand that a great number had been received and it would be necessary for a special meeting of tho council to beheld, when the recommendations from the sub-committees would bo considered. At the speaker’s suggestion it was decided to hold the special meeting on Tuesday next.

After lying neglected In an obscure corner of Seymour Square, Blenheim, for many years, Blinkinsopp’s gun, one of tho most interesting historical relics in New Zealand, is being mounted and will be set up on a small grass plot near the Plunket Society’s rooms in High street-, Blenheim. In 1831 Captain John Blinkinsopp, of the whaling schooner Caroline, drew up a deed with the natives under which he became the owner of the Wairau Plain, the “consideration” mentioned in the document being the guns. Subsequently Te E-auparaha and other chiefs repudiated the deed, alleging that all that they had granted . the captain was the right to wood and water for his ship and other facilities. The gun was retrieved many years ago" from Port- Underwood, where the Maoris had left it, and brought to Blenheim.
