Calf Club

Tho annual meeting of tlio northern branch of tho Horowhonua Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Association was held at tho Shannon school on Wednesday evening, there being in attendance besides Shannon people interested delegates from Opiki and Makerua. Tho president, Mr. L. J. Mark, presided and in the annual report referred to the activities of the calf club during tho 1932 season. He stated that tho interest taken by both parents and children was surprising; the knowledge gained by tho children in participation in the contest could not but do good, and now that they had an idea of what could bo done, he had no doubt they should have a great spread of the movement in theso parts. He hoped that other neighbouring schools would enter tho contest this year. He thanked the Shannon Dairy Co. and Mr. J. Aim for donations to the genoral fund; Mr. E. Tippler, as supervisor and judge of tho Shannon and Makerua schools, and Mr. G. J. Wilde, as supervisor of tho Opiki school, and for the valuable service rendered in transporting calves to Levin. Thanks wero also due to Messrs. Lawton and Connell, of the Agricultural Department, and to the committee and secretary for the interest taken and the great help given. Tho following officers were elected: President, Mr. E. Tippler; vice-president, Mr. J. Aim; secretary and treasurer, Mr. A, H. Morgan; committee, Messrs. Wilde, Allwright, Whitehead, Best, and teachers (ex officio); delegates to centre, president and vice-president. It was decided to write to various local bodies for donations; to invite Tokomaru and Moutoa schools to enter tho competition; and that the central executive be urged to lay down a uni form scale of marks under narrow heads for judging of animals. School Picnic

Owing to the majority of _ parents not being in favour of a picnic at Plimmerton this year, the school committee has decided to hold this annual function at Brady's bush, near the Otaum stream, next Wednesday. Every effort will be made in spito of the depression and bad timos to give the children and parents an enjoyable outing. Bowling On Saturday another attempt was made by the Levin Club to wrest the Kinnerberg feathers from Shannon, but once again the local team, consisting of E. Hook, Grey, Alexander and C. Hook (skip) proved too strong. The Levin team —Haylock, Routlcy, Capper and Langelan (skip)—started off in good form and wero 10 to Shannon’s single early in the game. The local team, howevor, soon found then feet and scored another 22 points while Levin was scoring 5, tho game ending Shannon 23, Levin 15. This is the fifth attempt made by outside clubs to lift the coveted trophies, and tho local team is to be congratulated on its fino performance. Tho Shannon Club was represented at the Mariawatu pairs championships on Saturday by Morgan and Grey (skip), but were defeated in the first game by lalcaro, 19—12. Croquet

The final round of the inter-club croquet competitions was. played by the local club last Thursday at Manawatu greens (Palmerston North). Rosults are as follow, Oroua players mentioned first: — Singles: Mrs. Price beat Mrs. Snell--26—7, Mrs. Edelston beat Mrs. Picard 26—16. Doubles: Mesdam.es iMason and Kerr beat Mcsdames Sncllijjor and Bovis 26-10; Mesdames Hicks and Hutton beat Mcsdames ; Morgan and B'laikie 26—18. Oroua 104 points, Shannon SI points. The usual Friday match for the club brooches resulted in tho holders, Mesdames Picard and Morgan, successfully defending a challenge from Mesdaines. Bovis and Blaikie, the scores being 26-13. Morgan Hoops: Mesdames Roach and Taylor (holders) defeated Mcsdames Moynihan and Laginton 18-H. Blaikie Brooch: Mrs Moynihan beat Mrs. Terry 26-19. For Mrs. Leng-Ward’s trophy Mrs. Taylet beat Mrs. Alexander 26 —12; Mrs Edginton defaulted to Mrs. Tayler. Mr. Geo. Satherlev is at present away on a fortnight’s cycling tour, and intends visiting through Taranaki, also Napier and Gisborne. A men’s social club has been formed locally, the main objects being to develop better fellowship and a wider knowledge of each other’s problems; educational and a general widening outlook on life. The first meeting was held during the week and an interesting debate took place, the subject be“That tho tobacco habit is a greater evil than fashions.” Messrs. Sinclair and Rossiter took the affirmative and Messres. Bass and Fell the negative. Mr. Grcgan of Levin acted as chairman. On a vote being taken, tho negative were adjudged the winners. Mr. Bass then outlined to the audience the objects of the club and explained that it was the desire of the promoters to have a committee elected representative of all cJas ®®! o! the community, and that every e SV would be made to maintain the high ideals for which the club stood. At the conclusion of the debate - t. Gregan gave a very interesting a - dress on the principles of '‘Economic Rent.” as laid clown by Henry George in “Progress and Poverty."

Girl Guides At the annual general meeting of the Girl Guides’ committee the balance sheet showed a credit of £2 2s. Mr. C. M. Cronquest, who presided, thanked the committee and Miss Quarrie, captain of the company, for their valuable work during the year, and to Mrs. Pilkington for conducting a firstaid class. Mrs. Mark’s resignation was received with regret. The following officers were elected for the forthcoming year: President, Mrs. VcntrySmith; vice-president, Mrs. WanngTaylor; secretary, Mrs. Picard; committee, Mrs. Cronqnest, Mrs. Brann, Mrs. Easton, Mrs. Burling and Mrs. Bass.
