“Come Quickly To Our Rescue”

S.O.S. FROM SINKING JAPANESE STEAMER

The Japanese tramp steamer, Kinsen Maru, caught in a cyclone, is reported to be sinking 590 miles east of Townsville. There was 15 feet of water in tho engine room when tho final S.O.S. was sent out. The message described their plight as very dangerous and added: “Come quickly to our rescue.”

Several vessels received the distress signals, the nearest being the Norwegian motorship, Talleyrand, which is 280 miles away. Sho is racing all speed to the scene but does not expect to reach the Kinsen Maru until noon to-morrow.

A terrific cyclone has been operating for a week off the Queensland coast. The vessel has a full cargo of wheat shipped at Adelaide cn route to Yokohama. She is a former German freighter seized in Australian waters at the outbreak of the war, and afterwards sold to Japan.
