Foxton

From Our Own Correspondent. Railway Tarpaulins Astray. At the monthly meeting of the Magistrate’s Court held at Foxton on Thursday before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., Robert Clarence Foon was charged that on January 1(3 at Foxton he did permit a railway tarpaulin, the property of the New Zealand Railways, to be unlawfully in his possession. He was also charged with a similar offence under date of February 3. In connection with the charges, Greig Barrington was charged on two counts corresponding to the dates above, with, aiding and abetting Foon. Neither defendant appeared. In outlining the case, Constable Owen said that during the holidays the local stationmastcr noticed a railway tarpaulin in a lorry pulled up at a local bowzer. On January 10 the lorry pulled into the station yard with the tarpaulin still aboard. The stationmastcr rook charge of the sheet on this occasion. Later the Railway Department were advised that another tarpaulin was in Foon’s yard. Barrington was Foon’s employee and said he got one tarpaulin from the Gear Meat Works at Wellington, and must have picked up the other by mistake in the Wellington railway yards. It was found that Barrington had not been given a sheet, at the Gear works and the explanation was altogether unsatisfactory. The Magistrate imposed fines of £2 in each case against loon and £1 in each case against Barrington, with costs lbs in each instance. Burl' Club Matters. Mr. M. The Chamber has now received a reply from the Commissioner of the Unemployment Board, who advises that the prosecution of this work with relief labour has already been carefully considered by the Unemployment Board, but it is regretted that the board is unable to approve of relief labour being diverted to this work.
