LIFELESS BATTING IN S.A.-M.C.C. MATCH

Visitors Take AH Day To Score 240 Runs

ONLY FOUR WICKETS DOWN

United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright Received Friday, 10 p.m. ADELAIDE, Mar. 10.

The weather was clear and hot for the cricket match England versus South Australia, and the wicket easy. The attendance was poor. England opened with Verity and Paynter, and the former survived an appeal for run out when 12, but was out next ball, which he skied to square leg, Ryan taking an easy catch. Tho scoring was slow for the first hour, only 30 runs being obtained, and only 54 by lunch. Partnered by Wyatt, Pavntcr sparkled and he was particularly destructive to Grimmett, running down the pitch and making brilliant straight drives. He hit Lee high for six to square leg, but his bright innings terminated when he was 02, being caught at deep mid-on by Ryan. He batted 130 minutes and hit five fours and one six.

Grimmett also got Wyatt caught in the slips close in by William. Wyatt was steadiness personified during his innings of 43, which included two fours, and he batted 94 minutes.

Opening with four off Grimmott’s third ball, .Tardine settled down defensively. Leyland, also, lacked his accustomed vigor, and at tea the score was three wickets for 157 runs.

Jardine had no inclination to hit, taking 75 minutes to score 30. Loyland hit fours off Grimmett and Tobin, bringing up 30. At this stage Leyland escaped being run out, having misjudged a throw-in. The main scoring was being done off Grimmett, who had two wicket for 99 runs off 15 overs.

When 30 Leyland mis-'hit Leo and was taken at deep point by Nitschkc. He batted 109 minutes and hit three fours, displaying unusual restraint. Ames straight drove Ryan for four, all being run, and 200 was hoisted in 259 minutes. Ames then opened out and straight drove Ryan and with a crisp square cut off Grimmett quickly ran into the twenties. His effort was in marked contrast to that of his captain who was satisfied with occasional singles. Following are the detailed scores:—• ENGLAND.—First Innings.

BUT BODY-LINE ATTACK CRAMPED HIS STYLE

Received Saturday, 1.30 a.m. ADELAIDE, March 10.

J. B. Hobbs, the noted former Test player, prior to embarking on tho Otranto for London to-day, said that Bradman was still by far the best batsman in the world, and if he had not been troubled by the so-called body-line bowling, England’s run to victory would not have been so clearcut.
