Lace Ball Provides Striking Display
The most striking display of Nottingham laco that has ever taken place was witnessed lately when Mrs Harper, the first woman sheriff Nottingham, England, has had since tho office was instituted moro than 800 years ago, gave a Lace Ball at the Council House.
There were 500 guests, and all the women, at M rs Harper’s request, wore dresses mado of Nottingham laco. Her own frock was of the new kind of lace known as Angel Skin, of which tho Queen and tho Duchess of York have recently ordered examples from Nottingham manufacturers. Tho shade was aquamarine blue. Mrs William Green, tho mayoress, wore a magnificent dress of powder blue Chantilly, and both she and the Sheriff revived a picturesque custom by wearing lace mittens.
Thero was an imposing procession up the grand staircase of the Council House, at the head of which the Sheriff stood to receive her guests. Although this was not the first lace ball that has been held, it was tho first time that wearers were asked to insist on a guarantee that their dresses were not of foreign material.
