FAREWELL EVENING TO MISS McDUFF On Friday evening a very large gathering of Makino residents took place at the school for the purpose of farewelling Miss T. McDuff who, after being assistant mistress for some time is leaving to take up new duties in a school nortli of Auckland. The evening proved a very merry one and was spent in dancing to music contributed by Mrs. P. R. Simpson and Misses Marjorie Hills, Myrtle Flutcy, Hariata Hynes and Mr. Maine. Before supper, Mr. P. R. Simpson (chairman of the school committee) on behalf of those present took the opportunity of extending a welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Maine, and wishing them every happiness in their new surroundings, a liter which a song of welcome was sweetly sung in Maori by Misses Rora and Hariata Hynes. Mr. Maine, iu speaking for his wifo and himself, said they were looking forward very much to living in Makino both from a social and sporting . viewpoint, and he, as a teacher, was anticipating with pleasure the tuition of the children. “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” having been sung, little Jean Rink, upon the invitation of Mr. Simpson, asked Miss McDuff to accept from •the children, parents and school committee a convertible hat box and suitcase, and expressed the sorrow of the children at losing her. Mr. Simpson, in voicing the regret of the assemblage at Miss McDuff's impending departure from the district, referred to her excellent work in connection with tho training of her pupils who had a particularly affectionate regard for her and over whom she had a splendid influence. Makino's loss, tho speaker said, would assuredly be another school's gain. Miss McDuff in her reply stated she would be sorry indeed to leave a district where she had been so happy and had made so many good friends. She had become . much attached to the children and was leaving them very regretfully. Her memories of Makino would always be pleasant ones and sho certainly hoped to visit it whenever an opportunity occurred iu tho future. A plentiful supper was supplied by the ladies of the gathering and was presided over by the wives of the committeemen.
