Saturday's Cricket Results

Senior Matches Drawn Batting Honours to Diederich The Manawatu Cricket Association’s senior ancl junior championship competitions were continued on Saturday in fine weather. A cross wind, however, made conditions rather unpleasant for players and spectators. The senior games were drawn, Old Boys replying to Palmerston’s irst inning’s total of 348, with 310 runs for eight wickets at stumps. V feature of the Old Boys innings was a fine knock hy the left-hander, Jiedrich, who was unlucky to lose his wicket when only four runs short of the coveted century. In the other game High School's innings concluded with 379 runs on and United had lost six wickets for 262 when stumps were drawn.

HONOURS BOARD

ott (S) and Bolton (13) being the not out batsmen.

Palmerston v. Old Boys

Palmerston occupied the crease all the first afternoon and at the end of play had 348 runs on the board for nine wickets. The not-out batsman was A. M. Ongley, who had not opened his account when McVicar’s run-out was the signal for the drawing of stumps. Palmerston did not continue their innings, declaring with nine wickets down for 348. The bowling analysis was as follows: Waldegrave, one for 81; Gallichan, 2 for 99; O’Keefe, one for 21; Holz, none for 33; Diederich, none for 30; McKay, one for 46; Leng, none for nine. Holz and Gallichan opened for Old Boys, but with only 10 runs on, Holz, who had scored nine, snicked Berquist into Norris’s hands. Diederich joined Gallichan and a useful partnership resulted. The total had been raiseil to 120 at the tea adjournment, Gallichan then being 61 and Diederich 35. Gallichan and Diederich took the score along to 144 when Gallichan returned a hot one to Berquist, who accepted the catch. Gallichan had made 70, including 13 fours, and he had helped to add 134 runs for the second wicket. Lang joined Diederich, who was batting steadily. Diederich celebrated Lang’s arrival by placing one over the fence for six and then late cut the next delivery to the pickets. He was 58 now, and ran into the 60’s with another nice four through the slips. Lang failed to get going, repeating Gallichan’3 performance by returning a ball one to Berquist.—ls4-3-0. ■With three wickets down, Old Boys still required 185. Diederich started to speed things up and he drove the fast bowler to the fence off consecutive balls. His tally made pretty Tending, the last six scoring shots at this stage being a six and five fours. The total was 177 and Diederich was . 74. He opened the next over by lifting Berquist over the fence to bring 180 up and his own total to 80. O’Keefe, started quietly, but he snicked the fast bowler to the fine leg boundary to send 190 up. Hollier took over from Berquist at the pavilion end and O’Keefe hooked his third delivery to the track, sending 200 up. When 210 had been signalled O’Keefe failed to get on to one from Hollier, and Leet accepted the catch. Eight runs later Diederich, who only required four to reach his century, opened his shoulders to one of Hollicr’s deliveries, which pitched well out on the off, and pullod it into his wickets. Ho had played a great innings and included in his total of 96 were two sixes and 14 fours.

With about 45 minutes left for play and 131 Tuns still required, there did not appear to be much chance of Old Boys securing a first innings lead. Akuira and Miller batted until just after 6 o'clock, and then Akuira, who had made 21, succumbed l.b.w. to Leet. The light was failing. Bose joined Miller, but after knocking up eight he wa3 out leg before to Beet. 279-7-8. With seven minutes left, Miller, who had batted very solidly, cocked up one from Leet, Mullins taking an easy catch close in. Miller had made 08, including three fours. The total was 2SB. Cottier and McKay were together when stump's were drawn, Old Boys being 38 runs short of their, opponents’ total, with two wickets still in hand.
