"Burns’” Night

SCOTTISH SOCIETY HOLD SOCIAL AND DANCE To celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Robert Bums, the illustrious poet, the Manawatu Scottish Society held a social and dance at tho Cosmopolitan Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a good number present, including the Pipe Band, and as the result of an invitation extended members of the Dannevirke Caledonian Society also attended. The initial part of the evening was devoted to a speech on Burns by Mr. J. M. McLinden, of Palmerston North, and concert items, and the remainder to dancing.

Mr. J. S. Jenkinson, president of the society, who was in the .chair, introduced tho speaker, who gave a very interesting survey of the lifo of Robert Bums. At the conclusion Mr. Jenkinson moved and Mr. W. Allen ondorsed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. McLinden. This was carried by acclamation. Mr. Jenkinson stated that ho had heard innumerable speeches on Bums, both in New Zealand and. in Scotland, but he could honestly say that Mr. McLinden’s had been the best ho had over heard. Mr Allen endorsed these remarks. Tho attention of those present was drawn to a Scottish Standard flag which hung on tho wall. Mr. Jenkinson stated that during tho war period the flag had been sold and Tesold to raise funds to provide comforts for soldiers in the tronches. By this means a considerable sum had been Tai3cd. The flag, which had finally become the property of Mr. D. Munro, of Palmerston North, had been donated to the Pipe Band. Tho following items were contributed; —Vocal solos, Miss E. Thompson, “There was a Lad was Born in Kyle,’' “My Heart is Sair”; Mr. Henderson. “Scots, Wha Hao,” "The Learig,” "A Mans’ a Man”; Mr. Buglass, “The Star o’ Robbio Bums”; Mrs. Jensen, “Ye Banks end Braes,” "Robin Adair” (accompanied by Mrs. Barlow); Mrs. Findlay, “John Anderson Ma Joe” (accompanied by Mrs. Barlow). All the artists, except where otherwise stated, wero accompanied by the society’s honorary pianisto, Miss I. Monhonnct. Mr. Jenkinson stated that all tho songs contributed woro composed by Burns. The haggis, which was niadei and donated by Mrs. R. Rcaburn, was played in by Pipers Nicholson and Smith. Mr McLinden gave the “Ode to the Haggis,” which was then cut by Mr. Jenkinson and handed round. Dancing occupied the remainder of tho evening, for whieh Mr. Bonner played excellent music. Mr. H.
