City Rates Coming In Satisfactorily

RETURNS COMPARE FAVOURABLY WITH LAST YEAR’S FIGURES People who are obliged to pay rates are putting off the fateful day as long as they can in other centres but Palmerston North seems to be an exception for, to date, the amount paid is fairly satisfactory compared with last year. On January 25, £15,903 4s Gd was outstanding compared with £12,710 Gs Id last year. The total City Council rates struck for the current year were £76,537 7s 4d, tho payments to date being £60,634 2s lOd.

To December 24, £28,268 4s 3d hau been collected, while from January 4 to 14 a further £30,206 2s lid came to hand. Tho 10 per cent, penalty was added on January 14 and up to the 25th instant £2159 15s 8d was added to mako the total collection £60,634 2s lOd.

A comparison, shows that tho rates struck for 1931-32 totalled £82,309 0s 4d, the amount collected to January 25 being £69,598 14s 3d. The balance outstanding at that dato was £12,710 Cs Id, while this year £15,903 4s Gd is being awaited. River Board Rates. Tho River Board rates, paid at the same demand, wore this year struck at £2311 18s lid, tho payments to date being £1683 6s and leaving a balance outstanding of £628 12s lid. The rates collected to December 24 amounted to £738 14s lOd, from January 4 to 14 £SSI 4s 3d, whilo after the penalty was imposed on January 14 £63 6s lid came to hand up to January 25. This leaves £628 12s lid still to come.

In the City Council rate demand is included the general rate of 2{d in the £l, special rate of 3 17-252 d in the £l, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board rate of 4-7 d in the £l, library rato of l-9d in tho £l, water rate 3£ per cent, on the annual rateablo value and sanitary charge fixed at 17s Gd.

The River Board rate is divided into three classes, A (9-16 d in the £1), B (5-lfid) and C 3-16 d).
