Co-ordinating Dairy Interests

Important Meeting of Factory Representatives

SERIOUSNESS OF RENNET POSITION

Important resolutions were carried at a meeting of approximately 30 representatives of the Co-operative Dairy Factory District Associations, held in Palmerston North yesterday, convened by the N.D.A. Tho Hawke’s Bay, Bush, North Auckland, South Wairarapa, Wairarapa Federation, Manawatu, South Auckland, Taranaki Federation and East Coast districts were represented, while also present were representatives of the New Zealand Cooperative Rennet Company and the Egmont Co-operative Box Factory’. Mr. A. Morton, president of the N.D.A., occupied the chair. At the outset he explained that the real purpose of the conference was to discuss the desirability of the various co-opera-tive units co-ordinating their interests. The importance of retaining the available supply of veils for the Nov, Zealand Rennet Company was fully diseased and great concern was shown as to the position in which the company was placed. The following resolution was passed: "That this meeting lias fully considered the rennet requirements of the dairy industry and the position that has arisen owing to the export of veils. It is our unanimous opinion that, for the protection of cheese manufacturer's, the export of veils should be prohibited entirely for the coming season, and that export in future years should be subject to a special license and should be only for any excess over a quantity providing an ample reserve in\.Ncw Zealand. The veils do not yet belong to exporters, and if prohibition of export is notified at this stage, it is a matter in which dairy’ farmers and dairy factories are most concerned. Wo arc convinced that these interests will be best served by the Government fixing a definite price based on the average world value, and that all tlic veils produced should be made available to the New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company, which is owned by the cheese-making industry.” A lengthy discussion next took place a's to tho quality of factory requisites which have been supplied to tho dairy industry, and it was stated by the chairman that the executive of the N.D.A. had approached the Government some months ago with a request that the Scientific and Industrial Research Department should immediately set up a standards department, whereby dairy factory’ requisites in the future could be procured on a specification which would conform with the minimum standards a's laid down by the department. The meeting was of the unanimous opinion that this was particularly necessary for elice'se bandage, salt, parchment, rennet and cheese colour. A resolution to this effect wns carnec. The principle of co-operative buying was discussed fully’, the following resolution then being carried unanimously: “That this meeting considers that the principle of co-operative buying should be as far as possiblo observed by the co-operative dairy companies, and that its own importing and manufacturing supply companies, such as the N.D.A., the Egmont Co-operative Box Company and tho New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company, shoiuc receive an entire mcasuro of support, and that it is the opinion of this meeting that no co-operative supply company’s price should be judged by t.u. price given, but that it should be judged after the rebate has been taken into account at the end of the season, and that the quality of goods also should be taken into account.” Tho meeting was unanimous that wherever possible British goods should bo purchased, and in thi's regard the chairman announced that the association had just completed an agreement with British Oils (N.Z.) Ltd., with regard to the distribution of lubricating oils. In support of this the following motion was carried after a representative of the firm concerned had addressed the gathering: "This meeting of dairy representatives confirms the principle of purchasing British lubricating oils through the National Dairy Association, and undertakes to use its best endeavours to further the project by co-operating with the Dairy Association, whose aim is to sell to the dairy industry and farming community a first-grade British product at the lowest possible cost.”
