Wanganui Education Board

(Special to Times.) WANGANUI, Last Night. The lirst meeting for 1933 of the Wanganui Education Board was held this afternoon. Present wore Messrs E. F. Hemingway (chairman), J. Aitken, W. Benefield, A. S. Coleman, P. Munro, J. K. Hornblow, R. Dukcson, M. H. Oram and Colonel Whyte. A telegram of regret at being unable to attend to-day’s meeting was received from Mr. J. S. Tingey, of Feilding. He desired that his keen appreciation of Mr. Swanger’s past services and best wishes for his future be conveyed to Mr. Swanger. The Education Department has authorised a grant for the erection of a new school building of one room at Makino road. Tho architect expects to be able to make a commencement with the work early next month. When the building is erected the board will be in a position to complete the sale of the old building and site to the Makino Hall Committee. A grant has also been authorised for the erection of an additional class-room at Parewanui. This work will bo commenced next month.

It was decided that in rationing the work among teachers, preference be given to those who had only one term of teaching last year. In discussing instruction given the children regarding motor traffic, Mr. Hornblow said that flying metal was as dangerous as the cars themselves. It was resolved that the Manawatu County Council be advised that teachers do direct the children as advised by them.

In speaking of the board’s section in Cuba street, Palmerston North, Mr. Oram said that at present this section of about three acres was in a most unsatisfactory state and covered with longgrass which was a menace at this time of the year. The section was also used as a dumping ground for rubbish. Mr. Oram said that an offer had been made for the section, of £3 per year, and as it would be fenced and looked after, it would be advisable to let it. The board decided to follow Mr. Oram’s recommendation.

A seven-wire fence has been erected along the western boundary of the teacher’s residence at Awahuri. This fence divided the teacher’s area from the recently acquired area. Carnarvon: The work necessary to bring about an improved orientation and the remodelling of this building is well in hand and every effort is being made to bring about completion before the school year commences.
