North Island Tennis Championships Finish
Per Press Association MASTERTON, Last Night. Tho North Island tennis championships were virtually concluded to-day in ideal weather. Malfroy wrested the men’s singles title from the holder, R. A. Court. The loser played a good steady game, but was not in Malfroy’s class. Miss Whyte retained tho ladies’ title against Miss Howell, who was defeated after a closely-contested second set. Results of chnrnpionship events are as follows: r Men’s Singles Fourth round: Lowry beat Barrer C—3, 6—2, 7 —5; Malfroy beat Firkins 6—3, 6—2. Semi-finals: Court beat Coombe (Manawatu) 6—4, 5 —7, 6 —2; Malfroy Lowry B—6,8 —6, 7—5. Final: C. E. Malfroy (Wellington) beat R. A. Court (Hawke’s Bay) 9 —7, 6 — 2, 6—2. , Men’s Doubles Semi-finals: Hawlccsworth and G. A. Pcarcc beat Barrer and R. A. Court 6 —l, 0—1; Coombe and E. S. Pearce beat Court and K. Dyer 6 —o, 6 —3. Final: D. C. Coombe (Manawatu) and E. S. Pearce (Wellington) beat P. Hawkesworth and G. A. Pearce (Otago) I—6, 5—7, 6—3, 6—2, 6—2. Ladies’ Singles Semi-finals: Miss Howell beat bliss Bell 6—3, 6—3; Miss Whyte beat Miss M. Rutherford 6—3, 3 —6, 7 —o. Final: Miss M. Whyte (Wellington) beat MiSs N. Howell (Hawke’s Bay) 6—o, 9—7. Ladies’ Doubles Semi-finals: Misses Macassey and Gould bent Misses Bell and Sturroclc 6—3, 6—l.
Final: Misses M. Macassey (Wellington) and B. Gould (Canterbury) beat Missies M. Whyte and S. Todd (Wellington) 6—3, 6—3. Combined Doubles Fifth round: Rliodes-Williams - and Miss Gould beat Hoddor and Miss Nathan 6 —3, 6—2. Gills’ Singles Final: Bell Payton (Masterton) beat Patricia Riddiford (Masterton) 6—3, 6—4. Handicap finals were -won as follows: Ladies Singles (B grade): Miss PHassell (Masterton). Ladies' Doubles (A grade): Misses R. G. Bradley and L. Rutherford (Masterton.) Ladies’ Doubles (B grade): Misses J. Rutherford and J. Betts (Masterton) Combined Doubles (B grade): PRishworth and Miss P. Betts (Masterton.)
