Helen Hayes Triumphs In “Arrowsmith” Film

The heroism of scientists who fearlessly expose themselves to the danger of death in its worst form in the tropical fastness of a plague-ridden island is powerfully portrayed in “Arrowsmith,” a great screen presentation of a great novel. This United Artists film, adapted by Sidney Howard from tho celebrated “best-seller” of Sinclair Lewis, has been conceived and executed in a masterly fashion, having a sequence of situations running the whole gamut of emotions. • “Arrowsmith” opens at the Regent on Tuesday next. Ronald Colman is east in the stellar role. Popular by Teason of his fine work in “Bulldog Drummond” and other notable successes, the English actor plays an American for the first time in his career. As tho ambitious young doctor of medicine, with a big heart and an active, scientific brain, forever searching for remedies for the ills to which the flesh is heir, Ronald Colman is vitally alive, full of the fire of. enthusiasm which makes his acting so convincing.

Helen Hayes, as Mrs ATrowsmith, gives art admirable portrayal of the devoted wife, and her work in this great film should life her to a new plane. As Sondelius, the much-travelled scientist, and expert in tropical medicine, Richard Bennett gives a faithful interpretation of a difficult character. ‘‘ Arrow-smith” i 3 as nearly flawless as a good picture can be. The pity i 3 that films of this calibre are few and fer between.
