Glen Oroua

From Our Own Correspondent. Last Saturday week the Glen Oroua Tennis Club played a friendly match against Rongotca B team. The day was beautifully fine and a most enjoyable time was spent. The local ladies supplied afternoon tea, the visitors expressing their appreciation of the kindness shown. Glen Oroua proved a little too strong for their opponents, the high bouncing of the ball on the clay court puzzling the Rongotca players, who were beaten ’by 11 sets (87 games) to 5 sets (66 games). Following are tho individual scores, Glen Oroua player's being mentioned first: Men’s singles: N. Prebblc beat Florence, 6 —2; R. Last Saturday the local team travelled to Rangiotu to try conclusions with tho latter team, and a very interesting match resulted. It would be difficult to find teams more evenly matched, and the result was in doubt until the last set between Miss K. Dixon (Rangiotu) and Miss V. Hobbs. Prior to this set Glen Oroua had S sets (70 games) to Rangiotu’s 7 sets (6!) games). Tho game went to 5-all and deuce, Miss Dixon finally losing, 5—6. Had the position been reversed the match would have been a draw, both in sets and games, but the luck weni to Glen Oroua by 9 sets (76 games) to 7 sets (74 games). Two years ago a match between the two teams resulted in a draw, both in sets and games, and to almost repeat the performance on Saturday was somewhat remarkable. Residents of the district will be pleased to learn that Dillon Sexton, who sustained a fractured skull as the result of a fall from a horse some weeks ago, has been discharged from hospital and is now making good progress towards. complete recovery, though of necessity it will be some considerable time before ho is completely restored to hcatlh. Your correspondent was recently shown by Mr. J. Waller a large bone one of two —found among a collection of smaller bones dug up by men draining on the property of Mr. Duncan at Glen Oroua. The bone was almost a yard in length and owing to the unusual size is possibly that of a moa. The bone was in a very good state of preservation, and if it proves to be a moa’s leg bone the bird must have been of gigantic size. During the past few days welcome rain has fallen after a very dry spell The pastures during the pa'st two months have presented a very parched appearance. Conditions have been generally very favourable for haymaking, but the milk supply has fallen away considerably. Mr. and Mrs. Parlane and family have returned home after spending a few days- at Ohau and Pukeroa Bay,
