COMPOSER’S DAUGHTER CONDUCTS A BAND.

the first time in history a young woman —Miss Avrill Ooleridge-Taylor, daughter of the famous composer—conducted a Royal Marines band, says an exchange. Under 3ier direction the Chatham U 1 * vision Baud played two works at the Royal Marine Barracks. The first work was "April,” a tone poem, which Miss Coleridge-’laylor wrote two years ago, and which was broadcast six months ago from London. It is reminiscent of her father’s writings, and is fresh and exhilarating. The other work was the "Othello” suite composed by her father. The band responded well to Miss Ooleridge-Taylor’s baton, and the performance was loudly applauded by a very large audience. Miss Ooleridge-Taylor, who is still in her twenties, has previously conducted the municipal orchestras at Eastbourne, Buxton. Torquay and Bath.
