From Our Own Correspondent Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hyde, who have been on holidays, lmvo returned to Shannon. Mr. B. Wilkinson and family left on Sunday for Whakatane. Miss Aim and Miss V. Aim, who have been spending the holidays at Otaki, have returned to Shannon. Miss Myrtle and Miss Tatty Hitchman have returned to Eeilding after an enjoyable holiday spent with Mrs. Burke, of Buckley, Shannon. t Mrs. C. M. Tromewan, Knrori, Wellington, returned home on Monday after staying with relatives in the Shannon and Palmerston North district. Mr. and Mrs. H. McGuckin arc spending the holidays at Waiau, South Island.

Miss MaureCn Conchic has entered the Palmerston North Hospital for an operation.

Mrs. Waring-Taylor, "Wyke,” and tho Misses Waring-Taylor are expected back from Plimmerton this week.

Miss Ellis Easton, Buckley, returned from Wellington on Saturday. Mrs. W. M. Brown is t.ho guest of Mrs. Mc.L McLachlan, of Woodvilie, at Waikarltic beach.

Father Brennan, Catholic priest in charge of tho Shaanou and Fox ton parishes, left Wellington by the Wanganella on route to Ireland on an extended visit to his . parents. He was the recipient of a presentation from his Shannon arid .Tokomaru parishioners, which was accompanied by 1 heir best wishes 'for an onjtiyablo holiday and a safe return.

Mr. T. C. Thwaites presided ovor the swimming baths committees, when the delegates of the various sports bodies in tile town were present. It was decided to approach a life-saving club and try to arrange for a demonstration at the old Foxton bridge site. Fire Brigade

The following report was presented at the annual meeting of the Shannon Firo Brigade: “Last year has been a year of progress for the brigade, and has been so successful that there is no damage to report. The brigade has had a full complement of members and during the year practices have been held fairly regularly, there being keon competition for the cup presented by Supt. H. Hook. Two hundred feet of hose was purchased to replace some which was worn and tho rest was thoroughly examined and patched where necessary. The engine has been repainted and is now housed in the station.”

Tho financial report showed that during tho year over £ISO has been handled. The balance-sheet showed that the year commenced with a credit of £7 17s 4d and finished with a credit balance of £43 Is 3d. The total profit from six dances was £69 8s 7d. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr. E. J. Butt; superintendent ’ (held over); deputy-super-intendent, Mr. H. D. Einhards; foreman, Fireman J. King; secretary, Mr. P. Kennedy'. Fireman H. D. Bichards was appointed to represent the brigade on the "Shannon Swimming Baths Committee, and it was decided to earmark the sum of £lO for donation to the swimming baths fund. Valedictory There was a large crowd in the Parish Hall when the friends of Mr. Harold Hook met to wish him good-bye on his trip to South Africa. Mr. C. Conquest made tho presentation, and iu humorous vein stated that he wasn’t going to relate “Harold's” history, as it was too well known; but the large crowd present testified to tbeir guest’s popularity. Ail present wished him tho best of trips and a safe return. _ Mr. Oronqucst then presented him with a leather suit-case amidst applause and the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” There was more applause when Mr. Hook got up to reply. Ho said ho was very sorry to bo leaving Shannon and would like to express hi.i appreciation for all the public of Shannon had done for him in the past. The large number present, had completely taken him by surprise, but ho felt very rateful to them for coming. along. During the evening Mr. J. Bovis spoke on behalf of the Fire Brigade, of which institution Mr. H. Hook was superintendent. Dancing was then indulged in until an early hour, tho music being supplied by tho local orchestia. Tennis On Saturday afternoon Mangaone played Shannon'on tho Shannon tennis courts. Unfortunately rain fell, at the end of the day and a few sets were unfinished. Mangaorc wero easy winners on the afternoon, Mr. Ostler thanking the Shannon club for its hospitality and inviting the club to visit Mangaore in Telays, but not all at once, as the accommodation was not available. Mr. Bobinson accepted the invitation ou behalf of the club with tho greatest of pleasure. The results were as follow, Mangaore names being mentioned first: — Ladies* singles: Miss Duncan Josfc to Mrs. Long, 5—7; Miss Wilson beat Mrs. Bobinson, 6—-4;, Mrs. Nicol beat Mrs. Pope, 7—5; Mrs. Martin lost to Miss Moynihan, 6—l; Miss Thomson lost to Miss Finuerty, 7—5. . Men's singles: Campbell beat Enbinson, 6—4; Owen beat Tippler,. 7 o; Ostler beat Charles, 6 —3; Martin lost to Bosch, 4—6; Frost beat Booker, 6 2; Wilson beat Aitcheson, 9 —7. Men’s doubles: Campbell and Owen beat Bobinson and Tippler, 6 3; 0.->t-ler and Wilson beat Charles and Beach, 6—2; Martin and Frost beat Bichards and Aitcheson, G—o. Ladies' doubles: Mesdames Nicol and Martin beat Mrs Pope and Alis's Moynihan, 6—3; Miss Blackwood and Mrs. Campbell beat Misses Brown and Finnertv, 6—3. _ Mixed doubles: Campbell and Miss Duncan lost to Bobinson and Mrs Long, 9 —ll; Owen and Miss Wilson beat Tippler and Mrs. Bobinson, 6 2; Ostler and Mrs. Nicol beat Charles and Mrs. Pope, 6 —l; Martin and Mrs. Martin lost to Boach and Miss Moynihan, 3 G; Wilson and Mrs. Campbell beat Booker and Airs.
