Swapped Job Tragedy
A man who died in hospital at Carlisle as a result of the explosion in the Manchester Waterworks tunnel, had only two hours before exchanged places with a mate, who some distance away, was unhurt. Harry Tosh, who regularly works as a spannerman on the drilling machine at the rock-face had complained of feeling unwell, and Frederick Kyle, aged 21, took his place. Tosh went to work as a shovelman instead of Kyle. When the explosion occurred Kyle was one of the six men seriou'sly injured, and he died. The other five injured are Andrew Lindsay, Eobert Duncan, James Waters, Patrick Colgan, and Patrick Smith. The hero of the explosion was James Gebbie, a young steel handler, who, though himself injured and suffering’ from shock, went to the aid of the men who were more badly hurt. With others he made several journeys to the shaft-head, a mile and a quarter away.
