Palmerston arid High School at Wickets all Afternoon

Century to Keith Hatch

The Manawatu Cricket Association’s senior and junior competitions were continued on Saturday under favourable conditions. The wickets were easy and the outfields fast, and good scores were registered by the Palmerston and High School batsmen who kept the Old Boys and United teams in the field all afternoon. Playing against Old Boys, the competition leaders, Palmerston had knocked Up 308 for the loss of nine wickets when stumps were drawn and Mullins, Hollier and Joe Ongley carried off the batting honours for the side. In the other game, High School had rattled on 322 for seven wickets during the afternoon and the feature of the batting was Keith Hatch s innings of 118. M. Ongley, who scored a century the previous week, appeared certain to repeat the performance but a high catch into the outfield sent him back to the pavilion after he had made 80. HONOURS BOARD

(Wareham) at 255 and the sixth (Spelman) at 294. Ongley was scoring with powerful shots all round the wicket but just after 300 had been signalled, he put one into Sandman’s hands in the deep field. Ho had made SO, including 13 fours. Arnott and Bolton were at the wickets when stumps were drawn, the former having eight to his credit and the latter 13. PALMERSTON v. OLD BOYS

Palmerston won the toss and batted, Norris and Robertson opening. With 15 runs on Robertson was given out to a cateh behind the wickets. With the addition of only ten runs Gallichan scattered Pegden’s stumps and with two down for 25 the position was not too good for Palmerston. Norris ana Hollier then became associated :» a useful partnership which added 60 runs for the third wicket. Norris, however, was run out on the fourth ruu after he had made 42, including four boundary shots. Mullins joined Hollier and they were .together. at. the. tea adjournment when the total was 130, Hollier then being 30 and Mullins 3.7, the latter, who scored a straight six and two fours off Gallichan’s last over, being particularly aggressive.. The rato of scoring was accelerated on resuming and at a few minutes to five o’elock the partnership had been w-rth a hundred to the side. When Hollier had made 62 he hit out at a full toss.from Galliehan, failed to get on to it properly, and was brilliantly caught by Bert O’Keefe at mid-off. Holder’s total included seven fours and a five. Mullins at this stage was 58. J. Ongley joined Mullins and quickly got going and the score mounted to 250 in double-quick time, Ongley scoring with good shots all Tound the wicket He hit a brace of sixes off Gallichan land then put one into Lang’s hands on the boundary, Lang putting it on ■the carpet. With the total at 253 Muilins was ruu out. He had knocked up 75 and had helped to put on 65 for thi fifth wicket. His total included two sixes and ten fours.

JUNIOR COMPETITION

Kia Toa Well Ahead of High School. Playing against High School, Kia Toa knocked up 274 in their first innings. Hancock gave a great exhibition with the bat and his total of 116 included 19 fours. Other double-figure scores were Howard (41), Peck (27), Topee (25), Evans (15), Jordan (14) and Weston (11). Winnard (5 for 79) and Fletcher (4 for 90) were the most successful bowlers. High School were dismissed for 67 in their first innings, the double-figure scorers being Tucker (16) and young Ivan Wasley (14), Peck took six wickets for 2-9 and Bolt two for 13. High School lollowed on, their second innings being in progress when stumps were drawn. Y.M.C.A. Lead Unemployed A.

At the end of the day’s play Y.M.C.A. had established a first-innings load against Unemployed A. Unemployed made 107 in their innings, Munro (26), Robb (22) and Bulford, Webby and Bailey (each 12) getting the runs. The destructive agents were Dickinson (5 for 24) and Goodjohn (3 for 33). Y.M.C.A. had lost five wickets for 146 at stumps, the principal scorers being Byrne (46), Tapp (30 not out), Dickinson (21), G. Griggs (17) and Cameron (13). Webby had taken three wickets for 25.

Old Boys Bat Well Against Palmerston

In the game played at Terrace End park Palmerston won the toss and sent Old Boys in to bat. Old Boys then proceeded to give their opponents some leather hunting and the innings realised the big total of 397. L. Haft knocked up a chancoless 121, Trow 70, Cockery 52, Spring 30, McGavin 26 not out, Dredge 19, Oman 16, Heaphy 12 and Gardner 11. The fourth wicket partnership between Hart and Trow yielded 139 runs. Childs, Davis, Madgwick and Lovell bore the brunt of the attack but without much success. Palmerston had lost three wickets for 25 at stumps, Finlay being the doublefigure scorer. Big Scoring By City Council. Playing against Unemployed B at Terrace End, City Council knocked up 288 runs for nine wickets in their first innings, in reply to which Unemployed had 61 on the board for six wickets at stumps. For City Council Gavey played a slashing innings for 118, retired. Waugh knocked up 34, Burgess 28, Hands 25. For Unemployed, Cox and Weston each compiled 15.

With only a dozen runs added Ongiey snickey McKay into Miller s hands behind the sticks. He had contributed 52, including three sixes and five fours. It was a bright knock. 265 —6—52.

McVicar and Kells made another good stand, taking the score to 339 before Kells, who had made 39, was run out. Kells hit five fours. Leet failed to get going and McVicar was run out just before stumps were drawn, the Palmerston team having 348 runs on with a wicket still in hand. HIGH SCHOOL v. UNITED

United won tho toss and put School in, Iv. Hatch and McVicar opening to the bowling of Sandman and Woodham. The score mounted steadily despite repeated changes and SO had been signalled when McVicar, who had contributed 22, was bowled by Sandman. Hatch and Fletcher continued the good work and at the tea adjournment had sent the score up to 142, Hatch being 96 and Fletcher 17. Seven bowlers had been tried. In the first over after the adjournment, Hatch hooked Sandman to the pickets to reach his century. Fletcher then struck some “pay dirt” and the total was raised to 197 before Hatch, who had made 1 118, returned one to Woodham. Hatch had found the boundary on 1.1 occasions. Before the total had been increased Fletcher followed, Hatch to the pavilion after putting one into Penny’s hands near the square leg boundary. Fletcher, who had hit half a dozen fours, scored 48.
