Smithy Gets Warm Welcome at Hastings
WAIT 73 TO BE WORLD’S OLDEST PILOT Per Press Association HASTINGS, Last Night. Sir Charles Kingston! Smith arrivcil at Hastings from Gisborno this afternoon in continuation of liis, tour of the Dominion, carrying 14 passengers, lie was welcomed by the Mayor and prominent citizens and received a great ovation from a crowd of about 4UOU at the Hawke’s Bay Club’s new aerodrome. The club celebrated the occasion by holding a very successful air pageant. Kingsford Smith was escorted by seven planes, four belonging to the local club, threo Air Force planes and ono from tho Manawatu Club.
Replying to tho welcome, Kingsford Smith said he did not aspire to be the world’s greatest pilot, but the world’s oldest. Ho valued hi 3 neck abovo everything else and did not juicu'risking it unnecessarily. . Smithy takes part in tho Napier carnival aero pageant to-morrow and returns to Hastings on Sunday for passenger flights. Ono of the passengers will be Mrs. Adamson, the centenarian who made her first flight last November.
