TENNIS TOURNAMENT NEARING THE END

Finding ianawatu Title Holders FINALS TO BE PLAYED TO-DAY •

Excellent progress was mado yesterday with tho Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship tournament, one final being completed and the finalists found in the majority of tho other sections. To-day will witness the completion of the tournament, and with so many well-known players taking part it is expected that there will bo a big attendance of the public. Tho Linton street courts were again in splendid order yesterday, but conditions were very trying owing to the heat. There were some hard-fought matches and play of a high order was witnessed.

In the men’s singles championship, E. D. Andrews, who has held tho title for a number of successive years prior to going overseas, was compelled to scratch, his retirement being due to a blistered foot. However, he remains in the championship doubles, paired with J. N. Lowry (Hawke's Hay), and with him will contest tho linal of this particular section with N. R. C. Wilson (Wellington) and A. C. Stedman (Auckland). Andrews played one game in the singles before announcing his retirement. Ho met Thorpe in the third round and was then limping. He took things easily, being content to play from tho back-line, and was never extended to win, C —2, 7 —5. C. E. Mall’roy, who on Thursday defeated Andrews in tho Wellington, singles final, was unable to come up to Palmerston North to fulfil his engagements, but the Hawke’s Bay players, fresh from contesting their provincial titles, put in an appearance and were busily engaged in matches throughout the day. In the semi-finals of the ladies’ singles Miss Whyte (Wellington) was too strong for Miss M. Rutherford (Palmerston North), 6 —o, 6—l, while tho game between Miss Macassey (Wellington) and Miss (ilenny (Hawke’s Bay) went to three long sets, the southerner winning 6—4, 4—6, B—6. Stedman was far too good for Coombe in the men’s championship singles, practically driving the Feilding player off the court to win, 6 —o, (1 —1. The game between Boddy and Davys ran to three sets, the local player getting the honours.

In the earlier rounds there was a good game between Boddy and Lowry. Lowry had match point twice in the second set, but failed to get home and eventually lost, 4—6, 9—7, 6—4. The game between Coombo and Charters (Whnngarci) also ran to three sots, Coombe being too steady for his opponent and winning, 6—3, 4—6, 6—3. Three sets were also needed in the game between Wilson and Dr. Salmond, the Wellingtonian finally getting control over Salmond's cut shots, to win, 4 6—2, 6—l. The best doubles match of the day was between Lampe and Wheeler and Wilson and Stedman, the score, 6-—4, 6—4, in the latter pair's favour, being nc criterion of the play. ltobertson and Airs. Beattie played well in the championship mixed doubles and took the decision from a strong pair in Stedman and Aliss Haggitt, 56, 4—6, 6—3. Misses Afacasscy and Haggitt eliminated a strong Haw'ko's Bay pair in Airs. Smith and Aliss Purcell in the second round of the ladies' doubles. The second set was exceptionally hard fought. The only final decided during the day -was that in the ladies’ handicap doubles, Alisses Dewe and Kerr proving the winners.

During the tournament the catering arrangements have been the subject of much appreciatory comment. Alisses Barnett and Skerman have charge and are assisted by capable helpers. Tho state of the courts and the attention given to them by the ground superintendent. (Air. J. Kershaw) have also been favourably noted.
