Reproach
(From The Gift Book of New Zealand Verse)
You say that Scottish heather Is fragrant after rain, And soft spring winds arc stirring Along an English lane, But will you have forgotten When the rata comes again?
If I told you that the tree-ferns. Arc green and dewy-wet, That the ti-treo is in flower And the gorso is golden yet, Would your reart beat slightly faster, Or do you quite forget?
The koninis, old and twisted, Outvie your English may, The rata on the mountain Grows more scarlet every ray; And don’t forget you loved it Before you went away. —Alma Chamberlain
