Burglar Attacks Store Manager

UGLY INCIDENT AT EKETAHUNA (Times Special.) EKETAHUNA, Last Night. An attempted burglary in Eketahuna this evening had sensational consequences."' When tho manager of Yates’s Cash Store (Mr. Charles William McLaughlan) returned to the premises at about 8.30 in order to cover up his windows, ho surprised an intruder who attacked him with what was apparently a sharp metal instrument. A heavy blow on the head rendered tho store manager unconscious, and inflicted a nasty wound which bled profusely. Mr. McLaughlan recovered consciousness after some time and staggered out of tho shop to givo the alarm, but in the meantimo the burglar had made his escape and is reported to have departed hurriedly in a motor-car which was waiting outside the shop. Mr. McLaughlan was attended by Dr. Simmers and removed to his home. His injuries are fortunately not of a serious nature. No stock was removed by tho intruder, whose flight was- too precipitous after the unexpected return of the manager. Tho police are scouring the countryside, but no arrest had been tnado up till midnight.
