MEETING OP COUNCIL Tlio Kiwitea County Council met at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean (chairman) presiding). Thero wore also present Crs. F. E. Tappin, \V. Hair, N. V. Shannon, F. O. Stack, J. A. T. Brown, J. H. Williamson and W. .P. Shaw. Correspondence The following correspondence was dealt with:—

From tko Treasury Department, advising payment of lines collected in the Feilding Magistrate’s Court amounting to £8 11/ and refund of stamp duty on interest to local authorities in terms of the National Expenditure Adjustment Act, 1932, amounting to £4l 9/10. —Received.

From the Kairanga County Council, forwarding £65 19/6 heavy traffic fees. —Received.

From the Public Works Department, forwarding a copy of a circular regarding conditions and life in single men’s relief camps in the district.—Received. From the Canterbury Progress League, forwarding a copy of resolutions passed at a conference held at Christchurch regarding motor taxation, and requesting the council’s support.— It was agreed to support tho resolutions.

From the Matamata County Council, requesting support for a resolution with reference to the control of ragwort and rabbits.—lt was agreed to support tho proposals and to refer the letter to the Kiwitea. Rabbit Board. From the Main Highways Board, forwarding authorities for the expenditure of subsidy on maintenance of main highways for the period from October 1 to December 31.—Received. From tho Pahiatua County Council, requesting information as to the contribution paid by Kiwitea for the services of the district health officer.—lt was agreed to supply the information. From W. F. J. Say well, Rangiwahia, requesting permission to shift a boundary fence.—Approved under the usual

conditions. From the Cheltenham Hall Committee, thanking the council for its promise to assist in the provision of a car parking area opposite the hall.—Received.

From the Manawatu County Council, forwarding a eopy of a resolution regarding the decision of a local bodies’ conference to classify main highways in the No. 9 highways district to a maximum of third class.—Cr. Hair thought that there should be some control over the speed of pneumatic-tyred lorries, which did more damage to the roads than the solid-tyred vehicles. Mt. Eggers, county overseer, agreed with the classification and remarked upon the necessity for restricting the speed of the trucks. The council agreed to support the classification.

Rate Position The treasurer reported on the rate position as follows: General rate, struck £8572 4/9, paid £2213 10/3, outstanding £6358 14/6; special rates, struck £2635 4/9, paid £554 5/, outstanding £2OBO 19/9; arrears outstanding (three years), £2145 2/10. Overseers’ Reports

The county overseers reported as follows: Cheltenham riding: The sections of main highway had been kept in order with the grader. Minor repairs to water tables and surfacing on roads other than main highways had been carried out. The contractor was making satisfactory progress with carting out maintenance metal. Kiwitea riding: The grader had trimmed the roads in the riding, including the sections of main highway. Minor repair work had also been carried out. The decking on a large timber culvert on Coulter’s line was in a decayed condition, and new timber was now to hand to enable repairs to be carried out.

Waituna riding: The Toadman had attended to the usual maintenance work, The section of main highway had been trimmed with the grader. About 12 chains of new wire fence had been erected ou Eewa Hill for the protection of traffic. The roadman was at present engaged in carrying out minor repair work on the main highway. Ongo riding: During October about 100 cubic yards of spoil and rough boulders had been carted out from the Waituna metal pit, a quantity being used to improve the approaches to the Waituna bridge. In addition, 12 cubic yards of screened metal had been carted out for the bridge approach and 51 cubic yards delivered on the main highway, where earth banking had been carried out with the assistance of Ho. 5 scheme labour. Maintenance work on roads, including grading, had also received attention.

Kiinbolton riding. The sections of main highway had been trimmed, and loose gravel on the Terrace road raked in. The Toadman had mostly been engaged on maintenance work and on improving road surfaces on sharp bends. Minor work had been carried out in

the nature of clearing up Mr. Beard’s pit. The work of cleaning up the main street in Kimbolton was in progress.

Peep o’ Day riding: The roadman on the eastern section had attended to maintenance. A fair amount of surfacing had been carried out on the main highway in the direction of improving super-elevation on sharp bends. Tho soction of main highway had also been trimmed with the grader. On the western section, with the assistance of No. 5 scheme labour, tho roadman had attended to maintenance and the completion of a filling on Pakihikura road. Further improvements to sha.rp bends had also been effected.

Pakihikura riding: The usual maintenance work had been carried out, the narrow place on Bonehani’s Hill widened, and tho water tables attended to. Several points on tho Sandon - block road had been improved. At the Otara pit metal was being prepared for the top end of Pcka road, and 35 cubic yards of pit metal had been put out on the Mangarere road. Rangiwaliia riding: On the To Para Para road the big stones had been picked up and broken down, and 136 cubic yards of coarse sandy metal had been put on the broken metal for blinding purposes. An old culvert had collapsed on Bourkc’s Hill and had been replaced with concrete pipies. The water tables on the Mangoira and Oroua roads had received attention.

Hautapu riding. A point at the Dress Circle, Ruahine, had been improved, and Main Kawhatau, Potaka, Smith’s and Lower Titirangi roads had been graded. On Kawhatau road 2SP cubic yards of metal bad been put out from various pits and the river. On Lower Titirangi road good progress had been made during the past month. Attention was drawn to the very unsatisfactory condition of Jamieson’s bridge on the No. 377 main highway.
