S.P.C.A. Juvenile League Fancy Dress Party

MOST SUCCESSFUL EFFORT. For two or three hours on Saturday' afternoon All Saints' parish hall was crowded with charmingly dressed children, whoso happy voices and bright faces testified to their enjoyment of proceedings. Tho occasion was a fancy dress party organised by members of tho S.P.C.A. Juvenile League to inter* est the young people of the city and district in its objects. Festoons of lycopodium and coloured roses adorned tho walls and pillars and when the children took the floor the scene was a very animated one. There were many frionds of childhood days, animals, birds, butterflies, and all tho rest of them the characterisations being wonderfully well carried out. This gave the judges an unenviable task in making their awards for the different, classes. Tho judges wero the Mayoress, Mrs. A. E. Mansford, Mrs. D. J. Davies, Mrs. Barraud and Miss L. Warren and the prize-winners were as follow: Prettiest costumes: Anne Wallace, “Watteau Lady,” and Michael Wallace, “Knight in Armour.”

Best pair: Jano Monro, “Squaw,” Arthur Abraham, “Indian.” Most effective “hard-up” costume, (girl), Elizabeth Collins; (boy), John Murray. Best animal: M. Cunningham (penguin): Special prizes: Molly Macmillan, “Sandman”; Doreen Wix, “Daffodil”; Elizabeth Miller, “80-Peep”; Edie Oliver, “Old English”; Bruce McNae, “Huntsman”; Piers Abraham, ‘Turk’; A Wix, “A Golliwog.” The prizes were presented to the children by Mrs. Mansford amidst applause. Prizes had been generously donated by Mesdames Thwaites, Harrison, Gowing, Jacques, Mansford and Miss Henderson.

Miss Mary Dry, who came as “Bo Peep” and completed the character with a realistic sheep, received a special prize from Mrs. Gowing and Miss Henderson.

Dancing, games and a lovely afternoon tea provided by the ladies gave the children a really delightful time and five o’clock came all too soon.

Bev. D. J. Davies spoke briefly to the gathering and contrasted the treatment of children one hundred years ago with present day conditions. People who were cruel to children were naturally cruel to animal life, he said, but as conditions for children had improved more care and thought had been given to our dumb friends. Mr. Davies urged the children to link up with the S.P.C.A. Juvenile League and further its efforts to alleviate pain and suffer-ii-g.

“Tiger,” a beautiful cocker spaniel, was a very proud dog with his collection box and made an irresistible appeal. Eurther fun was provided for the children when two “Mother Hubbards” (Mrs. Gowing and Miss Heuderson) appeared and distributed squeakers, whistles, etc., thoughtfully provided by Mr. and Mrs. Gowing. The committee responsible for the very fine arrangements made comprised Mesdames S. GoMingham, Gowing, W. A. Jacques, Misses E. and P. Abraham and Hewitt, and they were ably assisted by Mesdames Harrison and Maitland, Misses E. Macmillan, and E. Nathan, Messrs. J. Winton, F. W. Gowing, Maitland and W. A, Jacques, the latter being an excellent programme master.

A very successful function terminated with tho singing of the National Anthem.
