Women's Institutes

AWAHURI The July meeting of the Awahuri Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Wednesday. Mrs. Rowlands presided over a very large attendance and welcomed three new members and tno visiting members from Bulls W.I. Mrs. T. Mansou was elected to the committee. Regret was expressed at Miss Montgomerie’s absence and best wishes for her speedy recovery were voiced. The stall was well laden with saleable articles, and those in charge were kept very busy. Tlio handkerchief compctiYon was won by Miss Pearce, Miss lowlands being second and Mrs. J". Hies third. Several members from the 'nils W.I. presented a most amusing id interesting playotto which was I ry much enjoyed by those present, r rs. Simpson, also of Bulls, gave a ist instructive demonstration on lift rug making, and this was keenly a Idled and greatly appreciated. After dainty afternoon tea hearty votes of hanks were carried by acclamation to Mrs. Simpkin, the performers of the playelte, Mrs. Bond and the hostesses (Mesdames Litchfield, Lucas and Miss Linton). The singing of the National Anthem brought a most pleasant afternoon to a close. Owing to the hall being engaged tiie next meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 10.

FOXTON. Mrs. A. P. Easton (president) presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting held on Thursday afternoon. A welcome was extended to visiting members from Tiakitaliuna, Tokomaru, Pahiatua and Canterbury, who later exchanged views on various subjects to mutual advantage. Correspondence included a most interesting letter fro inthe secretary, ltuisli Institute, Somerset (Poxton’s link at Home). This letter made reference to Pox Lon\s communication arriving in time for their Empire meeting in May, and to the reference by Sir "William AVaylund, chairman of the It oval Empire Society, to the same. He said: “My committee were particularly interested to learn of this linking of your institute with a similar body in Hew Zealand, and arc sure that such co-operation does much to strengthen the ties of Empire.” The writer, Mrs. Carl Wyatt, also made appreciative reference to the butter scheme and Poxton’s gift. The group report, aud that of the dramatic circle were then presented and the president congratulated the dramatic circle on its wonderful progress in every direction of its activities. Arrangements for tlie celebration of the institute ; s second birthday were made and it was decided that this would take the form of a social evening to be held on Tuesday, 16th. August. A cup and saucer trail was commenced on the suggestion of Mrs. Prank Procter. An artistically designed and beautifully worked doth belonging to Miss M. Barber was selected as Poxton’s exhibit for the Dominion conference. A bean competition, which was in Mrs. Owen’s charge, was won by Mrs. Bobbie, Misses Hobbs ami Stevenson. Later Mrs. Procter very ably demonstrated how to convert four benzine cases into a useful bedroom scat. Mcsdnmcs Hcrston, Robinson, S. Small, Stevenson, Misses Stevenson, Spoil's and McKnight made excellent hostesses.
