Women’s Institutes

SHANNON The May meeting of the Shannon W.l. was held on Wednesday last, when in the absence of the president Mrs. McKenzie presided over a fair attendance of members. Mrs. Ingley gave an interesting report of the Federation meeting held in Palmerston North, and members wore interested in the butter gift forwarded to the Charlwood Institute in th'e Homeland. The main attraction of the afternoon was the demonstration on pine needle basket-work by Mrs. Tremaine, of Foxton. Several members received instruction in this novel handicraft, and Mrs. Tremaine’s display of finished articles was greatly admired. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Hyde,- Cronquost and Haines, and during this adjournment Mrs. Barber delighted everyone with vocal solos.' A tea table competition proved entertaining and was won by Mesdam.es Barber, C. Easton, Radford and Thompson. Tho points prize competition, the best plain scones, was awarded to Mesdames Tremcwan and Blaikie, equal first. A special meeting will be held to-mor-row afternoon at 2 o’clock, at which delegates from Lovin, Foxton, Tokomam and Linton will be present, as well as Miss Crawford (voluntary organised), for the purpose of forming a group. AH members are requested to attend and to bring a plate. BULLS The May meeting of the Bulls W.l. was held in the Town Hall supper room last week and was largely attended, over 70 members being present. The President occupied tho chair. A motion of sympathy with relatives of the late Mr. A. Burne was passed. Mesdames Billman and Barltrop, of Feilding, gave a most interesting demonstration of bouquet and posy making, and at the conclusion were accorded a hoarty vote of thanks. Competitions held during the afternoon were won as follows: Scones, Mrs. Read 1, Mrs. L. V. Holmes 2; pikelets, Mrs. McGregor 1, Mrs. Signal 2; animal tearing, Miss E. Cooper 1. KIMBOLTON

The Kimbolton W.l. celebrated its first birthday on May 18. There was a Large gathering of members and their friends, and visitors from neighbouring institutes. Mrs. E. E. Hart, who, with Miss Crawford, organised the institute, was present, and gave a talk on the movement and wished the institute many happy returns of the day. Mrs. Victor Smith, of Feilding, gave a most interesting and instructive talk on the growing and cultivation of the chrysanthemum, which is the institute's floral emblem. Thore was quite a large entry for the chrysanthemum competition, Mrs. Dorward winning the prizes for the champion bloom and collection, and Mrs. Jones the decorated bowl. Mrs. Waterson won tho card competition’, Mrs. I. Jensen the cake, and a visitor from Rangiwahia the “Red Spa.’’ Members who had grown potatoes brought their crops to be weighed, Mrs. W. J. Beard winning with L151b., while Miss Ritchie was second with 751 b. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Calder, Chcseltine, Adsett, Misses Bartlett and Bloomfield. Mrs. Shannon conducted an enjoyable short community sing. Mrs. Barnicoat (president) called for votes of thanks for Mrs. Short and Mrs. Smith and thanked the visitors for attending and helping the institute to make its first birthday a success. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
