From Our Own Correspondent.. On Wednesday afternoon the-• Halcombo junior football team met Ohingaiti on tho recreation ground, th» match resulting in defeat for Halcomb# by nine points to three. Previous to tho football match *. ladies’ hockey match was played between Ilalcombe and Turakina, th« home side winning by seven goals to nil. The visitors were afterwards entertained at a dainty afternoon tea. On Saturday afternoon the local senior football team journeyed to Hunterville, the visitors being defeated by 11 points to three. At the euchre party held in tho school on Friday evening the ladies’ first prize was won by Mrs. A. Hulton, while Messrs. C. Paske, H. Wishnowsky and J. McKenzie tied for the men’s. In tho play-off Mr. Wishnowsky was successful. Mrs. J. D. Anderson and her granddaughter, Dawn, have returned from a visit to Carterton. Friends of Mrs. P. Rasmussen, senr., will bo pleased to learn that she. has somewhat recovered from her recent illness. Mrs. G. Woodcock spent the week-end at her home, returning to the Palmerston North Hospital for continued treatment. Mrs. E. Pratt, who has been an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital, returned to her home at Longburn on Sunday last. Miss R. Hubner has returned to Marton after spending a few days with relatives in Halcombe. Mr. C. Christian, chief clerk of the Halcombe railway staff, is being transferred to New Plymouth. Obituary One of Halcombc’s old and respected residents passed away on Friday last in tho person of Mr. Gordius Peter Macgaard, in his S6th. year. The deceased gentleman had been ill for some weeks, spending some time in tho Palmerston North Hospital, after which ho returned to the homo of his son, Mr. P. Macgaard, of Feilding, where he passed away. Mr. Macgaard was born on tho island of Bornholm, Denmark, emigrating to New Zealand in his early forties, and had been a resident of Halcombe for the past 40 years. He was predeceased by his wife six years ago, and leaves one son, Peter, and two daughters, Mrs. Kenny (Auckland) and Mrs. Jefferson (Auckland) to mourn thoitf loss. On Sunday afternoon the funeral took place at the Halcombe cemetery, Pastor Kristen, of Palmerston North, officiating at the graveside. Many old friends of deceased were present to pay a last tribute of respect, and many beautiful floral emblems expressed the esteem in which ho was held.
