Kia Toa Defeat Feilding Old Boys

THE MATCH IN FEILDING Rugby fans of Feilding and district put aside other interests on Saturday afternoon and gathered in force at Johnston Park to witness the match between Feilding Old Boys and Kia Toa, which saw tho “braves” from tho city win a by no means thrilling contest by 13 points to nine. The better team wor. without a doubt, and the personnel is to be commended for tho teamwork displayed. Of tho numerous scrums, Kia Toa got the leather away almost on every occasion, and their back line was frequently in action in tho style natural to the code. Their forwards worked well, while Strange and Griffen, and the •rearguard, McKay, played faultlessly. On the other hand, Feilding Old Boys fell short of tho standard of play expected of them, and much of their difficulties aroso through faulty handling by Pawson. Trass failed to show up as full back, and the team generally did not co-opcrato in its usual style. Noel Aniadio gave the best exhibition, and it was not until late in the game that Dovvo was noticed. The teams were:— Kia Toa (light and dark blue): McKay, Strange, Waste,y, Griffen, Simpson, Riley, O’Keefe, Pratt, Summers, Clausen,” Gordon, Hcatlcy, McKenzie, Findlay, Gleeson. Feilding Old Boys (green): Trass, M. Aniadio, N. Amadio, Bridge, S. Bramwell, Dewc, Pawson, Crump, Edhouse, Tait, Wells, Adsett, Wilson, Read, Knyvett. The kick off by the greens against tho wind was called back for a scrum, from which the visitors gained possesr sion to be stalled by Bridge. The greens gained a momentary advantage, which weakened and fell away, mainly on account of weak passes by Pawson. The visitors, aided by the wind, were soon attacking, Wasley missing a nice attempt at a potted goal. Shortly afterwards O’Keefe made an opening, the leather travelling 011 Griffen, who cut in to score comfortably. Ihc kick by McKay missed. 3—o. The greens were compelled to defend for some time, their failure to clear earlier being due to faulty passing and the active work of the attacking backs, who were kept busy by O’Keefe. A strong kick by Bridge enabled the greens to clear tlioir territory, and good work by Bramwcll witnessed the colts stage an attack which failed when Tom Amadio was unable to evade tho defenders. Falling back spectators were delighted to see Dcwe cut away on a solo run which promised well until T. Amadio knocked on. Tho blues then cleared and quickly gained an advantage which saw them closely pressing their opponents. In the open play which ensued a speculator came out to McKay, who hoisted the leather over the bar. 7 —o.

Again pressed, Pawson was caught holding on too long, and McKay sent over an easy penalty kick. 10 0.

With this handicap the greens commenced to put more vim into their work, and advancing over the half way line,' N. Amadio cut away in possession. Bridge failed to tako p, long pass, but Amadio camo up to gain possession and gallop on to score. A good kick by the try-getter was foiled by the wind. 10 —3.

Tho interval came with the visitors holding tho advantage. On resuming Pawson was prominent in leading the colts to the attack, but the good work failed through lack of support. Strange captured the leather, and a good kick saw the invaders repulsed momentarily. Their forwards opened another attack, which was made good through the pick-up by Tait. The leather travelled on to Pawson, to Read, to N. Amadio, who just got there. A good kick missed. G—lo. A vigorous rally by the blues followed, but tho defence had the advantage of tho wind and the kicking of S. Bramwcll, who found tho sideline with unfailing regularity. Gleeson cleared from a dangerous position, bringing play to the centre line, where from a lino-out the visiting forwards pressed on. The next movement saw Griffen make tho pace, toeing the leather on to rattle the defence. Trass failed to move quick enough, and the raider was on Dewc boforc he could rescue the leather, thus allowing Gordon to pick up and score. The kick missed. 13—6. Maintaining tho pressure, tho blues again assaulted, and on this occasion Wasloy was tho star performer in a thrilling contest for possession well up ’the sideline, near Fcilding’s goal. Amadio sent tho leather out in time. The throw-in from the linc-out favoured the greens, who cleared to their opponents’ 25. A long struggle in tho blues’ .near territory culminated in N. Amadio sending over a pretty penalty goal. 13—9. This effort brought new life to the game. The blues wore defending nobly, their rearguard offering a superb defence. From a five-yard serum the leather came out to tho greens and on to T. Aniadio, who was grassed within an ace of scoring by Griffen. The blues were penalised for an infringe-

incut, but the angle kick was too difficult to be made good. Thanks to the persistently good work of Strange the blues cleared, but failed to hold the ground won, and were soon defending vigorously once more. With time up the struggle concluded in midfield, with the visitors victorious by 13 points to nine. Mr. W. G. Wilson controlled the game.
