Competitions Conclude

CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNOUNCED. The festival of tho Manawatu Competitions Society was brought to a close on Saturday night with an excellent demonstration concert that packed tho Opera House to a late hour. Tho performers were chosen from tho prizewinning' competitors who contributed to a programme ol ; 5S iloms. At a suitable juncture the championship results were announced and prizes presented by Mr. J. A. Nash, M.H. The champions were:— Elocution: Lady, Miss Meryl Daniels (Wellington), 321 marks; gentleman, Mr. Errol Muir (Lower Hutt), 313 marks; boy, Eobt. Chcyne (Eastbourne), 311 marks; girl, Nola Hyde (Wellington), 343 marks. Vocal: Lady, Miss Jean McGiashen (Hawera), (560 marks; gentleman, Mr. R. Trewern (Wellington), SOS marks. Dancing: Marjorie Penman (Wellington), 360 marks. Special prizes: Cup (donor, Miss Gibbs) for dancing, over 12 years: Eunice Heath (Napier). Cup (donor, Miss Jones) for dancing, under 12 years: Dawn Larsen (Island Bay), Gold medal (donor, “Music Lover,” Wellington) for piano classes under IS: Joan Bolger (Taranaki). Gold medal (donor, Mr. P. H. Parr) for tenor solo: Mr. R. Trewern (Wellington). Trophies (donor, Mr. E. A, Orr) for piano duet, under lit. Joyce Ramsay and Margaret Radciiffc (Palmerston North). Medal (donor, Mrs. F. E. Matthews) for dancing: Joan O’Connor (Wellington). Lady elocutionist special: Miss Kathleen Bartosh (Lower Hutt). Specials by Miss Edgar (dancing judge) to Ngairc Keys (Wellington) and Marjorie Penman (Wellington). Special by Mr. Stanley Warwick (elocution judge) 'to Gwen Luff (AVcllington). Mr. J. A. Nash returned thanks to tile many workers who had assisted in making the festival a success and mentioned that the drawing of tuo art union had been extended to June 4. He appealed for additional support in order that the society might bo in a position to meet the expenses that had been incurred a sum of no less than. £450. Tho president of the society (Mr. M. 11. Oram) also thanked all helpers.
