Ted Oxley’s Easy Win

CROWLEY BEATEN ON TECHNICAL KNOCK-OUT 'PAHIATUA’S SUCCESSFUL BOXING NIGHT There was a crowded house in the King’s theatre, Pahiatua, last night, when the Pahiatua Boxing Association staged its first professional contest between Ted Oxley, the local boy, and Jack Crowley, of Wellington. Oxley was fighting" at 9.0 and his opponent was 141 b. heavier. The bout soon developed into something of a fiasco. Oxley was far too strong and too clevci for Crowley. In the first three rounds the Pahiatua boy did all the leading, scoring repeatedly with a very snappy left and following up with a good right to the heart, which had the effect of weakening Crowley. From then on to the fifth Crowley rallied and held his own. Half way through the fifth, however, Oxley got in with a powerful right and dropped his man for a count of seven. No sooner was Crowley ou his feet, than he was floored heavily for a count of nine, only to bo saved by the gong. He was very groggy on rising and experienced some difficulty in finding lus corner. In the sixth round the Wcllingtonian went down without being hit, more from exhaustion than anything else, and tho referee cautioned him for such tactics. Ho rallied again and looked more like seeing tho full distance out, but in the middle of the eighth round Oxley came again with a heavy battery of blows, during which Crowley’s mouth guard slipped, and he dropped to the fie or in a choking condition, the gong again saving him. The ninth saw the end, w'hen the referee (Mr. G. Watchorn) stopped the fight and awarded the decision to Oxley on a technical knock-out, a decision which met with the unanimous approval of tho audience. Oxley’s win was all tho more meritorious, seeing that ho fractured a small bone in his left hand in the second round—a fact, which was not discovered until after tho contest was concluded. The Prelims. Five amateur preliminaries whetted the fans’ appetites and provided some really good boxing. S. Walsh (Pahiatua) beat W. Hopkins (Palmerston North) on points; W. Bailey (Pahiatua) beat M. F. Power (Danncvirkc) on points; ,T. Bostics (Wellington) beat T. Carroll (Masterton) on points; H. Reeves (Pahiatua) beat S. Reid (Masterton) on points. The star six-round preliminary, between -T. Davies (Pahiatua) and T. McCord (M'asterfon), was won by Davies on points after an interesting bout. Messrs. E. It. Wimsett and .T. Louisson, of Palmerston North, were the judges for the amateur bouts, for which Mr. .T. P. Evans, of Palmerston North, was referee, while Messrs. Evans and Wimsett acted as judges for the professional contest.
