sufficient lopm to come up •on tho inside of Tarquiniqs, and tho horses came into violont collision, Don Joso falling ovor his rider, who was takoa to hospital with an injury to his head ana to his knee. His condition is not serious. It is.highly probable, however, tnat Don Joso will bo compelled to forfeit his engagemont for to-day. MASTER LU’S PROGRAMME. If present intentions arc adhered to Master Lu will contest both Great Northern events at Ellcrslie next month. A. Gilmer has been engaged to ride him in the hurdles, and J. MCltae, who steered him to victory in the Great Northern Steeples last year, will again have the mount on him in that ecvnt. Master Lu has done a lot of solid work, and looks in good rdor, but ho has not done as much racing .'this season as ho did prior to winning the big steeplechase 12 months ago. Ho is a particularly good jumper - , and handles heavy ground to perfection, but a hard raco in tho Great Northern Hurdles, which is run the day before the big steeplechase, will not enhance his prospects in the last-named event. “IN HOT WATER.” The Chicago paper, Collycr’s Eye, has no lovo for the Agua Calieute management, and a few days after the d-cision of tho big handicap the paper's Diego correspondent wrote as follows: “Agua Oalionto’s winter meeting staggers to a closo on Sunday with tho Traplands indeed a desolate picture. Horsemen are starving, unable to ship and unablo to remain here, and feed bills are unpaid.” Allegations regarding unpaid prize-money were also made, but a 3 Mr. Davis received his cheque for Phar Lap’s big win, that was probably an exaggeration. Still the picture is not a pleasant one for Now Zealand or Australian owners who arc giving consideration *to an American trip. The stakes on the days subsequent to the big race were decidedly on tho light side, tho highest for a winner of any of tho races on March 25, 26 and 27 being £SS. Thero were nine races on two days and eight on tho other. With such poor prizemoney it is no wonder many owners and trainers were financially in a bad way.

ENTERED FOR V.R.C. GRAND NATIONALS. A cablegram from Melbourne gave the names of several New Zealand horses that had been entered for the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race and Steeplechase,- to bo decided next month. Tho Hurdle Race, of three miles, is worth 1500 sovs, out of which second prize is 300 sovs, and 150 sovs goes to tho third. Penalties, after tiic declaration of weights, aro only incurred when the distance of any handicap hurdle race that may bo annexed is of the advertised distance of 2J miles or over. From any penalty, however, the winner of the Moreborough Hurdle Race of 2j miles, run at Flemington on Juno 6, is exempted. Ono success within the prescribed penalty area entails an extra 71bs; two or more, 101 b. As in prior years, tho maximum weight for tho Grand National Steeplechase will be 12.7. Of three miles and a furlong, its winning will enrich tho owner by 1750 sovs, second will bo 500 sovs, whilst the third cheque of 250 sovs is more than a mere consolation award. The same weight penalties and distance exemptions obtain as in tho Hurdle Race, but so as to allow candidates overy facility for public racing, the Prince of Wales Steeplechase, on June 6, of 21 miles, is free from penalty, whilst the Hopctown Steeplechase, on tho Saturday previous, has been made two miles and a half furlong. Handicaps for both races will be declared not later than 10 a.in. on Monday, May 30.
