MEDIAEVAL BEAUTY ON THE SWISS LAKES.—A view of Lucerne, the picturesque city which stands on the banks of the lake bearing the same name. The city is partly surrounded by the old towers seen here, and it was one of these, once said to be a lighthouse (lucerna), in Roman times, that gave the city its name. It is now a popular tourist resort.
