MEETING OF THE COUNOIL Tho Kiwitcn County Council mot at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Crs. D. L. Younger, W. Hair, N. V. Shannon, T. D. Wood, W. P. Shaw, F. O. Stack, J. A. T. Brown and J. A. Williamson.

Correspondence. The following correspondent was dealt with: — From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, forwarding schedule .of “thirds” accrued from Crown sections in tho County for the half-year ended 31/3/32, amounting to £43 19/3. Received.

From the Public Works Department, advising payment of subsidy as follows: Maintenance of main highways, £2.12 0/1; Haycock’s bridge, £251’5/5; and England’s bridge, £ls').—Received. From tho Public Works Department, advising that tho main highways board had approved this Council’s application for the payment of a £2 for £1 subsidy towards tho cost of tho land survey (£l6. 19/4) and land compensations (£ls) in connection with tho construction of the Haycock’s bridge. —Received.

From tho Town Clerk, Fcilding, re Power Board matters, and suggesting that in view of the recent local body deputation to tho Minister of Public Works that each of the six local bodies concerned in the Manawatu-Oroua Electric Piwcr Board district appoint a representative for the purpose of forming a permanent committee to further tho objects for which the deputation proceeded to Wellington.—Cr. McLean appointed. From the Department of Internal Affairs, advising that tho Government had decided to bring down legislation temporarily modifying tho provisions of Section 57 of the “Counties’ Act, 1920,” to tho effect that tho disqualification imposed by that Section will not apply in respect of tho non-pay-ment of any rates becoming due at any timo after the 31st March, 1930. Received.

From Mr. C. W. Coleman, Rewa, requesting a reduction in rent of Reserve 46, Block XVI, Ongo S.D., from £l2 to £9 pci- annum.—Referred to councillor for Riding to report. From Mr. F. 11. Thompson, Ruahinc, requesting a reduction in rent of Reserve 30, Block XVI, Hautapu S.D., from £3 15/- to £2 per annum.—Referred to councillor for Riding to report.

Rate Position The County rate position was reported on as follows:—General rates struck, £10,537 9/5; paid, £B2OI 17/2; outstanding, £1335 12/1. Special rates struck, £2899 1/10; paid, £2582 19/3; outstanding, £316 2/7. Arrears of rates on account of tho past three years amounted to £2G6S 3/11. Overseers’ Reports.

The County Overseers Messrs. Eggers and Stent, reported as follows: Cheltenham Riding.—Tho sections of tho main highways in this riding had been well maintained by tho power grader; also a section of the Cheltenham cross road. Tho roadman had been engaged cleaning out watertables and cutting back fern and scrub on Barrow’s and Coulter’s roads. All tho roads are in good order. Kiwitea Riding.—During the past month SOS cubic yards of maintenance metal were put on the No. 52 main highway. This road had been well maintained by the grader. The roadman had been engaged opening up drains and lowering a culvert on the Upper Bcaconsfield Valley road. Repair work had been carried out on Coulter’s and Perry’s Toads. Waituna Biding.—The roadman had attended to the work of improving bends on Rewa hill and the Rangitikei Valley road on tho No. 377 main highway. The drains on tho Rangitikei Valley road south had been opened up and a small bridge on the Mangapipi road redccked. The roadman was now engaged on tho work of improving bends on the Pakihikura hill. Minor repair work had been caried out on the Waituna Valley road.

Ongo Riding.—The section of No. 377 main highway in this riding had been kept in good condition by the grader. Two old culverts on the main highway had been renewed with 9in and 12in concreto pipes. The work of constructing a stone groyne for the protection of the ford on Jarorangi road had been completed at a cost of approximately £l7. The roadman had attended to the usual maintenance work throughout the riding as well as completing fences at the approaches to the Waituna bridge. Kimbolton Riding.—During the past month maintenance metal was put out on the No. 52 main highway. Both highways had been trimmed by the power grader; also a section of McBeth’s road. Water-tables had been cleaned out on the highways, Middle, Terrace, and John’s roads. Pccp-o-Day Riding.—The contractor had completed the work of delivering maintenance metal on tho IviwiteaTapuao road, the total quantity delivered being 724 cubic yards. The roadman was engaged in attending to the trimming of this metal and other maintenance work. On tho eastern section of this riding, the roadman had attended to minor repair work when not engaged in the metal pit. Pakihikura Riding.—A quantity of screened metal had been got ready for pot hole repairs and 07 cubic yards were put out on the Paka and Ohingaiti-Peniberton roads. A start had been made grading in tho loose metal.

Rangiwahia Riding.—A stone groyne and cement wall had been put in to repair tho damage done at tho Mangoira bridgo by the flood last month. Repairs had been effected to tho Black bridge, Mangahuia road east, and the Ivarowarewa bridge. A stone groyne should be put in at Karewarewa. The slips on tho Mangoira and Mangahuia roads were cleared away and 55 cubic yards of metal put out on tho weak pices. 90 cubic yards of earth were used at the bridge approaches. Hautapu Riding. Slips on the Auputa track had been cleared away and a quantity of metal screened. The points on tho Mangawera and Kawhatau Toads had been cut back and metalled. 107 cubic yards of metal

were put out on the main highway.— Received-
