Manawatu Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting

ON THE LAWN AT AWAPUNI. Tailored suits and tweed coats were, for the most part, favoured by the feminine patrons at Awapuni yesterday for the opening day> of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting, w'eathcr conditions not being of the (( ,best. Although rain fell in the morning and there were scattered showers throughout tho day necessitating rain coats to be hastily donned, tho sun shone brightly for the greater part of the afternoon. While it was a smartly dressed gathering, the prevailing tones were sombre, with browns in varying shades most in evidence. Tangerine trimmings provided a striking contrast, and hero and there were to bo seen frocks and ensembles in the new emerald, billiard table, and rcsida greens, also the new blues, with an occasional frock in cherry, ruby and wine, making a charming splash of colour. .Short bolted coats struck tho newest note and these wero seen in pony skin, astrachan and fur. The hat styles were intriguing, with tricornes, Johnny caps, Robin Hoods, or the drooping over one eye variety, smartly trimmed with gay little quills all in tho picture. The beautiful grounds with the vivid green sward and flower beds ablaze with phlox, marigolds, dahlias and Cannes made a wonderful showing and were much admired.
