GIFT EVENING TO MISS VERA AMER. (From Our Own Correspondent.) One of tho largest crowds that has ever assembled iu the school favoured tho gift evening tendered Aliss Vera Anrer ou Friday by tho residents ot' Alakino. Approximately 200 local and district friends of the bride-elect were present and tho building was taxed to its utmost to accommodate the number. A frosty uip in the air made conditions particularly pleasant for dancing which was indulged in by the majority while those who preferred cards found agreeablo entertainment in the supper room. Airs. P. R. Simpson, Alisscs Hariata H;yncs and Gcno Cummings and Mr. A. Withers played excellent dance music. Items which gave much pleasure were dances by Miss Dell Adsett, a vocal quartette by Misses Hariata and Eora Hynes and Alessrs. Charles and Herbert Hynes. Two Hawaiian songs with yodelling by the Misses Hynes, a recitation by little Miss Jean Rink, songs and a step danco by Air. C. Whiteman, songs with guitar accompaniment by Mr. H. Hynes and vocal items by Air. S. Alarshall and Master Ben Cummings. Air. Withers was the accompanist of the evening. Beforo supper Air. AV. P. Bickers, on behalf of thoso present, asked Aliss Amer and Mr. Alcads to take possession of the many gifts provided for their acceptance. Mr. Bickers also made eulogistic reference to. tho guest of tho evening and her people. An unique haberdashery bouquet artistically arranged by Mrs. Bickers was presented by little Dinah Davey to Aliss Amer, the company then joining in singing “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” On behalf of his fiancee and himself, Mr. Meads suitably replied, Air. Amer likewise speaking in appreciative terms of tho great kindness shown his daughter and her future husband. Dancing was resumed after supper and kept up enthusiastically till a late hour. - The “Alontc Carlo” waltz was won by Miss Miranda Rink and Air. F. Rink and tho “spot” waltz by Aliss Ida Amer and Mr. P. Gilchrist. Air. Bickers fulfilled the duties of M.C. At the end of a very jolly evening Air. Amer announced that the occasion was the birthday of Airs. Bickers and took the opportunity of wishing her many happy returns ot the day. He also warmly thanked Air. and Airs. Bickers who were mainly responsible for such, a delightful party. Before leaving for homo their friends formed a huge ring round the Amor family and sang “Auld Lang Syne.” Aliss Amer was wearing a dainty little frock of turquoise crcpe-dc-chine with touches of pink rosebud trimming.

Personal. Mrs. A. Muir, of Welliugton, is a visitor to Makino for the wedding of her niece, Miss V. Amer, and is tho guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. Amer. Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Toser, of New Plymouth, who are motoring through to Napier, are spending a few days en route with the latter's sister, Mrs. W. P. Bickers.
