Proposal to Alter Course of Tiritea Meets With Objection

McHAR-DY PARK PREPARATIONS. In connection with tho preparing of McHardy Park as a pleasure resort for Palmerston North citizens, a proposal was placed before the City Council last evening by the reserves committee that one acre of land at the rear of tho reserve should be exchanged with Massey College for half au acre near the road, so that tho Tiritea stream could be diverted to enable the Council to construct a roadway into the park.

Cr. G. Tremaino voiced the opinion that decision should be held till tho next meeting of tho works committee so that the Council could give mature consideration to the matter. The Council agreed to do this. Cr. J. Hodgens said he felt strongly against any suggestion to alter the course of the stream as the way it wound in and out around the bluff of the hill, made it exceedingly beautiful. Tho people of Palmerston North had, as it was, done very well by Massey College. Cr. W. L. Fitzherbert, chairman of tho reserves committee, thought that tho request should be granted because Massey College was an important institution and anything that could bo dono to assist tho College, should bo dono. The Council would be giving very little away.
